The monk painter(畵僧) Mun Go-san(文古山. c. 1850-c. 1930) was a Buddhist artist(佛母) at Yujeomsa Temple(楡岾寺) on Mt. Geumgangsan and was active in Korea and left many Buddhist paintings throughout the late Joseon Dynasty, the Korean Empire, and the Japanese colonial period and was introduced to the media as a representative Buddhist painting producer in the early 20th century. His surname in worldly life(俗性) is Mun, and his Buddhist name is Gosan Chuk-yeon(古山竺衍). He became famous as a painter at Mt. Geumgang, and it seems he had a great pride in his paintings. He left his signature on the Buddhist paintings he created and used his creativity to produce many Buddhist paintings withhis own personality
In this study, we looked at the Sixteen Arhats(十六羅漢圖) among the Buddhist paintings produced by Mun Go-san, in which his creativity and diverse capabilities were well demonstrated. There are many paintings of Arhats from Mun Go-san, and due to the nature of Arhat paintings, they are set against landscapes, and the various appearances of Arhats and their dependents and environments appear in a variety of ways, making them a representative group of works that clearly show the characteristics of the works among his Buddhist paintings. In particular, the figures of Arhats he depicts actively express the contents of < The Eighteen Arhat Songs (十八大阿羅漢頌) > by Su Shi (蘇軾, 1037-1101), a writer of the Northern Song Dynasty, while also expressing elements that allowed him to sense his unique painting style and the spirit of the times, making them very interesting.
