Seon(禪)'s tradition was passed down through Saja Sangseung(師資相承), where a teacher transmits the law to his disciples. The transmission of the law from a teacher to his disciples was considered very important in terms of respect for orthodoxy or the succession of a religious order. In Korea as well, the law of Seon in the concept of factions, which sought to assert the legitimacy of one's own faction, centered on the dharma lineage between teachers and disciples, emerged in the mid-to-late Joseon Dynasty. In particular, Daeheung Temple(大興寺) located in Jeollanam-do Haenam claimed the legitimacy of the sect through the establishment of the Cheongheo(淸虛) legal lineage.
Among the Cheongheo-line(淸虛系), the Pyeonyang faction(鞭羊派) and the Soyo faction(逍遙派) expanded their influence around Daeheung Temple from the late 17th century. Cheongheo's disciple Pyeonyang Eongi(鞭羊彦機) established Cheongheo's lineage by emphasizing the lineage of the Linji School(臨濟宗) leading to Linji(臨濟), Seogok(石屋), and Taego Bou(太古普愚), and asserted the legitimacy of the Cheongheo-line.
In addition, the fact that the Pyeonyang faction and the Soyo faction seek to emphasize the legitimacy of the legal lineage is also shown in ‘Cheongheo Yueui(淸虛遺意)’, in which Cheongheo had his ceremonial cape and bowl(衣鉢) delivered to Daeheung Temple. The Pyeonyang faction and Soyo faction, who were active around Daeheung Temple, took advantage of this to highlight Daeheung Temple.
As Daeheung Temple was designated as Pyochung-sa(表忠祠), Daeheung Temple was officially recognized as a temple that inherited the Buddhist tradition of Cheongheo. This series of processes was expanded to present Daeheung Temple as Jongweon(宗院), and Jongweon was framed as a system of 12 representative Seon preceptors(12宗師) and 12 doctrinal preceptors(12講 師) consisting of the Pyeonyang faction and the Soyo faction.
These 12 representative Seon preceptors and 12 doctrinal preceptors show two structures : inheriting the teachings of the Linji School(臨濟宗) and passing on the Huayan Study(華嚴學). Through this, Daeheung Temple produced excellent Seon masters and excellent instructors, and the prestige of Daeheung Temple was able to further expand after the 18th century.
