「최척전」의 형성과정과 17세기 서사 환경에의 재론 = The Formation Process of “Choecheok-jeon” and Reconsideration of its Narrative in the 17th Century War Context

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 17세기 동아시아 전란의 가족 이산을 다뤄 연구자들의 관심을 모은 「최척전(崔陟傳)」의 논의들을 통해 이 시기 전쟁 관련 서사 문학에 대한 재론의 발판을 마련하고자 하였다. 기존 논의들은 최척의 존재에 대해 실존 인물로 인정하면서도, 동아시아 삼국에 걸친 최척 가족의 이산과 재회 과정의 사실 여부에 대해서는 찬반으로 주장을 달리하고 있다. 각각의 논의들 역시 상호 반박의 여지가 있음을 원자료를 통해 재점검하고, 이로부터 작가 조위한의 기획과 위상을 허구 서사의 측면에서 가늠해 보았다.
작가 조위한은 「최척전」에 20대 시절부터 몸소 체험했던 동아시아의 전란 과정을 가족 이산과 재회의 과정으로 구현하였다. 시간적으로는 임진년 이듬해부터 30년에 이르며, 공간적으로는 한･중･일에 베트남을 포함한 동아시아에 걸쳐있다. 그리고 사건별로는 임진왜란의 발발부터 정유재란의 최대 격전인 남원성 전투를 거쳐 만주족의 등장을 알리는 사르후 전투로 이어진다. 이 점에서 본고는 「최척전」이 최척 부부, 그의 아들들, 진위경 부녀의 이산과 회합 과정에서 저마다의 개연성 속에 움직이는 인물들의 면모를 17세기 동아시아 격전의 역사적 시공간 안에서 정합적으로 구현함으로써 당대 사람들의 총체적 면모를 가족 이산의 서사로 묘파하였음을 확인하였다.
이로써 한국 서사문학사에는 「최척전」을 비롯한 「김영철전(金英哲傳)」과 「조완벽전(趙完璧傳)」 등의 사실 기록으로서의 귀환 서사와 「강도몽유록(江都夢遊錄)」으로 대표되는 병자호란 관련 의론적 몽유록이 존재하며, 「박씨전(朴氏傳)」･「임진록(壬辰錄)」의 민중들의 염원과 원망을 대변한 목소리도 확인하게 된다. 여기에는 실기류(實記類)로 분류되는 전란 체험을 서사화한 다양한 사실 기록들이 모태가 될 수 있다. 이는 동아시아 전란이 미친 영향의 깊이와 다양성을 말해주는 것이며, 이에 관한 연구도 17세기 서사 문학의 측면에서 심화될 필요가 있음을 재고해 보았다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper aims to reassess discussions surrounding “Choecheok-jeon,” a work that delves into the separation of families during the conflicts of 17th-century East Asia, garnering scholarly attention. In connection with this, existing discussions acknowledge Choecheok as a historical figure, yet opinions diverge on the familial separation and reunion process spanning the East Asian Three Kingdoms, as conveyed by him. In light of these conflicting viewpoints, the paper reexamines the original sources and assesses the credibility of each argument, attempting to gauge the significance of author Jo Wi-han’s conceptualization from the perspective of fictional narratives.
The author of “Choecheok-jeon,” Jo Wi-han, encapsulates his firsthand experiences of East Asian warfare from his twenties into a narrative focused on family separation. Temporally, it spans from the year following the Imjin War to thirty years later, and spatially, it extends across East Asia, including Korea, China, Japan, and Vietnam. The narrative unfolds through significant events such as the outbreak of the Imjin War, the culmination in the Battle of Namwonseong during the Jeongyujaeran, and the subsequent Sarhu Battle introducing the arrival of the Manchu people. However, the work intricately portrays the inner lives of characters moving with their individual relevance within the backdrop of the 17th-century East Asian turmoil, illuminating the inner thoughts of the people of that era through the narrative of family separation.
In the context of Korean literary history, records such as “Kimyeongcheol-jeon” and “Jowanbyeok-jeon” stand alongside “Choecheok-jeon” as factual narratives, while discursive dream records related to the Byeongjahoran, exemplified by “Gangdomongyulok,” and voices expressing the hopes and grievances of the people in works like “Park Sijeon” and “Imjinrok” are also evident. Various factual records classified as practical records (silgiryu, 實記類) may also be included. This reflects the profound impact and diversity brought about by the upheavals in East Asia, emphasizing the need for further research on this subject.
