<엘리멘탈> 주인공의 부성콤플렉스와 자녀역할부담 = The Protagonist’s Father Complex and the Burden of the Child Role Presented in Pixar’s Elemental

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 2023년 개봉 당시 픽사 애니메이션으로는 한국에서 최다 관객 을 동원한 <엘리멘탈> 주인공 여성 앰버를 부성콤플렉스와 자녀역할부담의 측면에서 분석해 흥행 이유의 일면을 고찰한다. 연구방법은 융의 콤플렉스 이론과 상담학의 자녀역할부담 논의다. 앰버는 코리안-아메리칸의 상징적 인 물로 불(火) 원소의 형상과 감정으로 표현된다. 첫째, 그녀는 아버지와 밀착 된 ‘착한 딸’로 부모의 기대에 부응하기 위해 외적 삶에 치중해 살아가는 부 성콤플렉스적 여성이다. 그러다 정반대의 남성을 만나 사랑하게 되면서 개성 화 과정을 통해 자기실현에 이른다. 둘째, 앰버는 ‘K-장녀’를 재현하여 자녀 역할부담을 가진 한국인에게 특히 공감을 일으킨다. 한국의 부모자녀관계는 타문화권보다 부모의 기대가 크고 자녀역할부담도 커질 수밖에 없다. 그녀는 진로기대부담, 부모간섭부담, 자녀책무부담, 보은에 대한 부담을 가지고 있다. 여성의 사회진출이 활발한 현대사회는 부성콤플렉스 여성이 증가하는 시대 다. <엘리멘탈>은 여성의 개성화와 자기실현이라는 인간의 보편적 주제와 한 국의 부모자녀관계에서 과중한 자녀역할부담이라는 특수성을 조화롭게 결합 시킨 글로벌 콘텐츠라고 할 수 있다. 이것이 <엘리멘탈>이 한국에서 괄목할 만한 성적을 거둔 이유의 일면일 것이라고 할 수 있다.

This study analyzes Amber, the female main character of Elemental. This film has attracted the largest number of Korean audiences among Pixar animations released in 2023, and the way this film presented father complex and the burden of the role of a child has been considered as one of success factors, which has been examined in this paper. Jung’s complex theory and discussion of child role burden in counseling are used as a method. First, she lives a disguised life to pretend to have a close relationship with and to meet her parents’ expectations. Then, she meets and falls in love with a man who has completely different characteristics that always looks for. Through this meeting she experiences individuation and reaches self-realization. Second, Amber can be considered as representing the “K-eldest daughter” (K-장녀), which makes her especially relatable to Koreans who have the burden of being a child. In Korean parent-child relationships, parents’ expectations are higher than in other cultures, and the burden of children’s roles inevitably increases. She has the burden of career expectations, the burden of parental interference, the burden of children’s responsibilities, and the burden of repaying gratitude. Elemental is a global content that harmoniously combines the universal human theme of women’s individuation and self-realization with the uniqueness of the heavy burden of child roles in Korean parent-child relationships. This can be said to be one aspect of the reason why Elemental achieved remarkable results in Korea.
