Southern blot hybridization and polymerase chain reaction were performed on DNAs samples from 14 patients to identify the types of human papillomavirus (HPV) causing condylomata acuminata and to compare the two mathods.
HPV DNA type 6 and/or type 11, which are low-risk types of HPV occurring in genital carcingnogenesis, were found in DNAs from all 14 patients by both methods. However, there was a disagreement between the methods about the types of HPV detected. Using Southern blot hybridization both types of HPV were detected in all patients. However, Only 3 of 14 patients were found to be infected with both types of HPV and the others with single type by polymerase chain reaction.
Therefore, the polymerase chian rection method is thought to be a more specific method for HPV detection and type identification.
