As we entered the post-cold war era, the concept of security was broadened. In addition to military security, the achievement of various security such as political security, economic security, social security, and human security is becoming an important task for all countries. Among them, the climate change problem has now gone beyond the realm of the ‘problem’ and has deteriorated into the realm of the ‘crisis’. The defense sector, which plays a key role in achieving national security, has also come to play an important role in national policy in coping with the climate crisis. The United States, leading the international security order, is showing changes in its defense policy to actively respond to the recent climate crisis. In particular, the Department of Defense Climate Adaptation Plan announced in 2021 presents a Line of Effort for achieving environmental security in the defense field. Through this study, we analyzes changes in the U.S. defense policy and derives implications.
