The purpose of this study is to investigate the forms of alienation revealed in city novel. The term alienation has many different meanings. According to Erich Fromm, alienation is essentially experiencing the world and oneself massively, receptively, as the subject seperated from the object.
This thesis focus on the writer knowledge of alienation represented in 1930's city novel. The writer of city novel tried to seize alienation of a money reification and self estrangement.
In modern capitalism, especially in the colonial social structure, money reification results when the human basic drive not fulfill. The writer portrays money reification as a market - direct man and automaton conformity image.
The alikenation of socialist results when the individual's is unclear as to what he ought to belive. The socialist in order to escape from the social isolation and powerlessness established mechanism of escape.
The essential characteristic of the alienated intelligentsia is his belief that he is not able to fulfill what he believes is his rightful role in society. The forms of alienated intelligentsia is self-estrangement. Self-estrangement is the degree of dependence of the given behavior upon anticipated future rewards that is upon rewards that lie outside the activity itself. The writer of city novel portrays intelligentsia of conflict in the colonial social structure as a self -estrangement.
The writer knowledge of money reification and self - estrangement portrays contemporary despair and agony as a dehumanized man and alienated man.
