The purpose of this study is to investigate the forms of alienation revealed in city novel. The term alienation has many different meanings. According to Erich Fromm, alienation is essentially experiencing the world and oneself massively, receptively, as the subject seperated from the object.
This thesis focus on the writer knowledge of alienation represented in 1930's city novel. The writer of city novel tried to seize alienation of a money reification and self estrangement.
In modern capitalism, especially in the colonial social structure, money reification results when the human basic drive not fulfill. The writer portrays money reification as a market - direct man and automaton conformity image.
