The slogan ‘Myeol-Sa-Bong-Gong(滅私奉公)’ means ‘sacrificing an individual for the country.’ This paper studied the characteristics of this slogan that appeared after the Sino-Japanese War in 1937. First, it was confirmed that imperial Japan is fascism or functional equivalent of fascism. And by comparing the meaning of this slogan with the remarks of fascists at the time, it was confirmed that the character of this slogan is fascist.
This slogan, often considered Confucian, had nothing to do with Confucian ethics. It was propaganda that said individuals must sacrifice unconditionally for fascist Japanese imperialism. The intellectuals of colonial Joseon who shouted this slogan internalized extreme nationalism. Therefore, in Korea, the institutions and cultures of the fascist Japanese Empire were reproduced under the name of the nation. As a result, this slogan represents the fascist character of imperial Japan and can be said to imply de-Confucian and fascist colonial modernity.
