산업별 재무요소가 ESG 환경 등급에 미치는 영향 분석 = Analysis of the Impact of Financial Factors on ESG Ratings by Industry

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 2020년부터 2022년까지 환경 등급을 확보한 한국의 상장기업을 대상으로, 각 산업별로 전년도의 재무요소가 환경 등급에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 실증적으로 분석하였다. 표준산업 분류코드를 기반으로 산업을 구분하였으며, 제조업, 전문 과학 및 기술 서비스업, 도매 및 소매업, 금융 및 보험업, 정보통신업, 건설업, 운수 및 창고업의 7개 산업을 분석대상으로 하였다. 자료수가 불충분한 농업 임업 및 어업 등 9개 산업은 분석대상에서 제외하였다. 분석 결과 각 산업별로 환경 등급에 영향을 미치는 요소가 다르게 나타났다. 특히, 제조업, 전문 및 과학 서비스업, 도소매업에서는 재무 및 인적변수가 환경 등급에 유의미한 영향을 미쳤으며, 정보통신업에서는 인적변수의 영향이 유의하였다. 또한, 성과가 우수한 기업과 높은 환경 평가를 받는 기업 간에는 긍정적인 상관관계가 확인되었다. 이를 통해 기업이 해당 산업에서 뛰어난 성과를 달성하고 충분한 자원을 확보하면 환경 문제에 더 큰 관심을 가질 수 있음을 제시하였다. 환경 분야는 유럽 공급망 규제 및 기후 급변으로 인해 최근들어 중요성이 부각되는 분야로, 한국에서는 대기업 중심으로 활동이 전개되고 있다. 환경 등급 또한 ESG 등급에 비해 국내에서는 연구가 더딘 분야로, 본 연구가 기업 환경 등급 연구에 대한 단초가 되기를 기대한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The study investigates how financial factors in the preceding year influence environmental ratings. We categorized domestic companies listed in the stock market, which received environmental ratings from 2020 to 2022, according to industry using the Standard Industrial Classification Code. The study analyzed seven industries, including manufacturing, professional science and technology services, wholesale-retail, finance-insurance, information-communications, construction, and transportation-warehousing. Nine industries with insufficient data, including agriculture-forestry-fishing, were excluded from the analysis.The findings indicate that the variables that influence environmental ratings vary by industry. In the manufacturing, professional, technical services, wholesale, and retail industries, both financial and human factors played significant roles. Conversely, in the information and communication industry, human factors were the primary determinants. Overall, the empirical analysis indicates a correlation between high performing companies and favorable ratings in future environmental assessments. These findings suggest that companies can prioritize environmental focus when they excel in their industries and have sufficient resources available. The environmental field is a field that has recently gained importance due to European supply chain regulations and rapid climate change, and in Korea, activities are centered around large corporations. Environmental ratings are also an area with rare research in Korea compared to ESG ratings, and we hope that this study will serve as a starting point for research on corporate environmental ratings.
