This study aims to discover the initiative of children in play. The study participants were 16 5-year-old children of Haneul Kindergarten, with abundant play. The participative observation was conducted for data collection and the examination of the initiative of children in play. The following results emerged from the study: the disappearance of initiative with insufficient information and resources in play, the acquisition of initiative through sensory exploration and discovery, the creation of initiative with abundant imagination, and the expression of initiative with familiar information and proficiency. The initiative of children could benefit from the support to expand the experience related to playing by being given the right and opportunity to use the time and space to play freely. These findings can assist teachers in the early childhood education to expand their understanding of the initiative in play.
