Neighborhood street is evidently one of the most important factors in the planning of new residential developments. Neighborhood street not only enables the efficient interaction between new and existing residential areas, but also plays a role as an extensional residential area therefore thought as an essential factor in site planning.
This study was started as a means of regenerating the use of Neighborhood street in site planning.
However, because of the limited amount of previous research on neighborhood street, the literature review for this study was replaced with an analysis of data and case studies on neighborhood street. The types of neighborhood street were classified as followed.
Type A : Vehicle passageway + Facility of street separated
Type B : Vehicle passageway + Facility of street adjacent
Type C : Pedestrian road + Facility of street separated
Type D : Pedestrian road + Facility of street adjacent
The data for this research was obtained through a study of housing complexes in the Yong-in and Bun-dang areas. However, a prototype for Type D could not be obtained therefore the study was done on the analysis of the remaining three types. Results were as followed.
One. The analysis of the usage of neighborhood street according to each type
Street space is more likely used as residential area rather than passageways, and maintaining a safe distance from vehicles is an important element in the usage of street. The usage of street space according to each type showed various differences, where residential facilities adjacent to street made a more active street and supported behavior of non-passage. Also, physical object did not cause any type of direct action. The results in behavior of non-passage was found as followed starting from the highest down. ⅰ) Vehicle passageway + Facility of street adjacent, ⅱ) Pedestrian road + Facility of street separated, ⅲ) Vehicle passageway + Facility of street separated
Two. The analysis of the rate of satisfaction among residents according to each type
The rate of satisfaction in the practical usage of street by residents were studied through questionaries classified into the following five categories. ⅰ) area, ⅱ) safety, ⅲ) convenience, ⅳ) amenity, ⅴ) social community
The results in the analysis of the usage of street and difference in views according to each type were as followed.
1) According to the results of the analysis on the observation of the usage of street, the area was more likely used as residential area rather than a road, and maintaining a safe distance with vehicles was found to be an important factor. A difference in the usage of street space according to each type was observed, and residential facilities adjacent to street made a more active street and supported behavior of non-passage. Also, physical object did not cause any type of direct action.
2) According to the results of the analysis on the rate of satisfaction towards street environment, residents of each type of area showed differences in the rate of satisfaction, where 'pedestrian road' types showed the highest rate. The satisfaction rate of the all-around street environment and specific categories were found to be closely correlated. Also, low satisfaction rates were found in the territory of street environment among all types, and differences were found in the satisfaction of specific categories according to each type.
ⅰ) Types with facility of street separated : relatively low satisfaction rate
ⅱ) Types with facility of street adjacent : high satisfaction rate in convenience and amenity, lowest in safety distance from vehicle, lowest in convenience of running a vehicle
ⅲ) Types with pedestrian roads : highest in safety of pedestrians and amenity, lowest in nighttime safety
Residents were aware of the fact that neighborhood street is an essential factor in new resident development. This study holds limitations that it is constructed of a limited amount of case studies, therefore unsuitable as a general theory. However, this study holds significance for it has included neighborhood street in the study of residential housing, and therefore is a field which requires future research.
