In this study, we tried to examine the competition and performance of the broadcasting market from various perspectives by analyzing how comprehensive programming channels and terrestrial channels(SBS) have continued market behavior in the broadcasting market and how the level of competition has changed accordingly. In particular, by examining the strategy of utilizing program genre resources that reflect the characteristics and purpose of the “comprehensive programming” channel, we tried to discuss the market competitiveness and public responsibility of broadcasters at the same time, and for this purpose, we chose the niche theory. As a result of the study, the niche breadth continued to change significantly in the afternoon, and SBS showed a higher the niche breadth than the comprehensive programming channel, but SBS tended to decrease compared to the rising value of four comprehensive programming channels during the analysis period. Subsequently, the results of analyzing the niche overlap looking at the level of competition showed that the niche overlap between SBS and comprehensive programming channels were measured high in both the afternoon and the main time. As the market influence of comprehensive programming channels expands, problems such as competing in terms of strategies to utilize terrestrial channels with program genre resources, and the programming focused on specific genres such as news/a current affairs program and documentary/ culture/discussion have affected terrestrial channels.
As new channel operators who have appeared as players in the broadcasting market called “comprehensive programming” have achieved market performance for 10 years, they confirmed that their market behavior is gradually progressing in a positive direction according to the purpose of introduction.
