Picturebook contents gained new platform of tablet PC, as the digital technology advanced. This make it possible to discuss interactive picturebook as narrative form that uses interactivity of digital media. But at the moment discussion about interactive picturebook doesn't cover the relation between reader's involvement and narrative of interactive picturebook. This study tried to analyze text strategy that structures reader's involvement and narrative function of reader's involvements.
The interactive picturebook changes reader's horizon of expectation in two aspects. First, the readers become a agent of tactile gaze. Second, the readers focus on point of view of picture. By these changes of horizon, the way of reader's involvement and its narrative function can be categorized into three types.
First, readers involve in picture by the direct hints of words. In this case, picture and words have an asymmetrical relation in aspect of narrative information. So readers make this relation symmetrical by involving picture. This way of the reader's involvement leads readers to foreground a casual relationship of the event. And this way of foreground have a characteristic of being conversational.
Second, readers involve in picture by suggestive hints of picture. In this case, picture has more narrative informations than words. So reader's involvement in picture enhances a picture. This way of reader's involvement is carried out by the change of point of view of picture. The point of view of picture changes from third-person to first-person. Then readers perform the role of character in first-person point of view. This makes readers to identify with character.
Third, readers involve in picture exploratively. In this case, picture and words already have a symmetrical relation in aspect of narrative information. So readers have to find point of involvement without information. Because of that. reader's involvement is related to object element rather than event element. Therefore narratively irrelevant background space becomes a playful space for readers. And through this play, readers can catch a character's emotion or a dominant emotion of the scene.
This study analyzed three way of reader's involvement in interactive picturebook. This categorization isn't an attempt to generalize a way of reader's involvement. Just an attempt to empathize a typical involvement. Analyzing the aspects of such involvement is meaningful as theoretical approach to early age interactive picturebook.
