      다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study aims to examine the development process and characteristics of Hwajeon (slash-and-burn farming) in Gangwon-do, focusing on the Daeryong-san Hwajeon area in Dongnae-myeon, Chuncheon. Daeryongsan Mountain, a representative Hwajeon area in Chuncheon, was a place of refuge to escape war or exploitation like any other Hwajeon area, but it was also but it was the last living place for the people who came to live. Above all, as the Japanese government loaned national forests to companies and individuals to exploit forests, the Hwajeon people became tenant farmers or were driven out to places such as Gando. Daeryongsan was also the site where various policies of the Hwajeon clean-up project that began in the 1970s were implemented, such as terraced farmland consolidation and Korea’s only civil servant welfare afforestation. The history of the Hwajeon on the Korean Peninsula is condensed in the Hwajeon of Daeryongsan.
Daeryongsan was a treasure trove of Gyuri farming culture that developed in the field farming area of the central and northern part of the Korean Peninsula, including Gangwon-do. In general, Korea’s Hwajeon, unlike the Hwajeon of other countries, were highly sedentary, forming Hwajeonmin villages, and involved not only hoe farming but also plow farming, and Daeryongsan were no exception. In particular, Sogyuri, where a small number of people gathered around cows for Gyuri farming, formed the basis of a joint labor organization and community culture in the Gyuri farming area. However, for reasons such as national security and forest protection, the ‘primitive farming method’, Hwajeon and the life culture of Hwajeon people have become objects that need to be overcome and eradicated without any value. With the government-led strong Hwajeon clean-up project, the Hwajeon disappeared in an instant, and along with that, the Hwajeon agricultural culture that had been built on the land for thousands of years disappeared.
