The architecture of 'familiarization' based on the metaphor is trite because of the habitual reference. So 'defamiliarization' based on the metonymy has arisen in architecture against the familiarized architecture. But both familiarization and defamiliarization have limitations, the triteness in former and lack of the communication in latter.
So this paper investigates metaphor and metonymy as the grounds for the relationship between architecture and them. Then it would find out the architecture of the metaphor as a medium of meaning and the architecture of the metonymy as text which makes a new reference through a juxtaposition. Furthermore, it investigates the possibility of explanation about the organization of familiarization and defamiliarization by the diachronic view of metaphor and metonymy.
From this point of view, the architecture of familiarization as the habitual reference has the communication by a easy and swift understanding, but it has limitation in architecture which has a trite aspect as the result of representation through the metaphor and the metonymy in classic rhetorics.
And the architecture of defamiliarization as a new reference can be divided into the ways of representation and presentation by G. Ulmor. The former ways are the collage and the montage, the latter ways are the collage-allegory and the montage-allegory. However, the collage and the montage in architecture have the limitation, the repesentational and superficial newness in closed system, by the result of investigating Jakobson's metaphor and metonymy. And the collage-allegory and the montage-allegory in architecture have the limitation, the lack of communication on account of a diverse interpretation, according to the result of investigating Derrida's metonymy.
Therefore, this paper suggests that the possibility of 'metonymic metaphor', which is rethought of the similarity of the metaphor in the view of metonymy, be considered as the alternative of familiarization and defamiliarization, and searches the architectural theorization of 'Familiarization based on Defamiliarization' by Frank O. Gehry's and Daniel Libeskind's architecture.
Moreover, the availability of the rhetorical discourse can be confirmed by this paper.
