      The need for experiential learning and experimentation is emphasized in pursuit of creative concepts valuing novel materials, tectonics and construction methods. From this background, architectural schools and practices adopt design-build programs to study material-specific digital fabrications by executing projects or developing prototypes. Of materials applied in digital fabrication, clay and ceramic are focused in this study. First, literature review is conducted to summarize historical changes and principles of design-build programs and fabrication techniques of clay and ceramic materials to categorize factors for case studies. Then this paper focuses on qualitative analysis of selected 8 examples - 5 educational programs in universities and 3 workshop programs. The comparison criteria include program objectives, research types, construction types, manufacturing techniques, and hardware for digital fabricaion. Additionally, distinctive characters of design-build programs are discussed, ranging from supplementary tools, software, to clay materials. Furthermore, pedagogical methods and contents are deducted from case studies and models for thematic intensive workshop workflow are proposed. In result, a design-build program highly depends on available equipments and preparation of distributed control systems and parametric scripts. Therefore, in the early stage of such programs, the exploratory research is proposed as helpful to set up hardware, software and material systems to develop design and construction.
