Many psychologists have claimed an individual's self concept is closely connected with his behavior and personality characteristics. Some study showed that it is clear that self concept and academic achievement are correlated.
The purpose of the present study is to analyze relationship between high school students' self-concepts and their academic achievement.
The sample for this study is 351 students randomly selected from high school students in Soon-Chun City in Chun Ra Nam Do. To measure their self-concepts the standardized self concept-scale was used, and academic schievement score were obtained by Chum Nam Education Committee-made-scholastic attaincments test.
The subjects chosen for this study are Korean, mathematics and English.
The conclusions of this study are as follows.
      1. The correlation between self-concepts of high school students and academic achivement is slighty positive at r = .247
In terms of relationship of two variables girl students show higher tendency than boy students
      2. Relationship between self-concept and three subjects was found as following order.
      1) mathematics (r = .232)
      2) Korean (r = .220)
      3) English (r = .123)
      3. There is a significant mean difference in academic achievement between group of high total positive self score (T.P) (over 75% ile) and group of low one (below 25% ile)
      4. There is also a significant mean difference between in total positive self score (T.P) between group of high academic achievement(over 75% ile) and group of low one(below 25% ile)
      5. Compared with cerrelations between academinc achievement and variables of self-concepts were analyzed as following order.
      1) personal self score (.221)
      2) family self score (.209)
      3) moral ethical self score (.198)
      4) physical self score (.122) and
      5) social self score (.120)
      6. Compared with the difference in variables of self concept between group of high academic achievement and low one, it were found to be significant at the .005-.001 level in moral ethical self score, personal self score and family self score. There was no statistical difference in both physical self score and social self score.
This study attempted to find only the relationships between self concept and academic achievement by statisical analysis and interpreted the gathered data.
The conclusions drawn from this study are based upon data which are too limited to generalize. Therefore, this study calls for the further studies which could distintly analyze relationship of two variables.
