The purpose of this study is to provide a philosophical approach to English conversation and to deepen the skill of spoken communication by having it. To put it in easier terms, "rather than just to be trained to talk, how to think first and then speak in order to make it practically happen." There exists a prevalent misconcept on mastery of English conversation that if anybody resides long enough in English speaking society the skill of communication should be done almost automatically. This study is done to oppose and rebuke that kind of misunderstanding.
"People say what they mean." is an old American proverb which indicates that a certain kind of dynamic relationship between 'utterance' and 'meaning' exists. Having an analytic attitude in what we communicate in our daily life is a crucial issue in considering the meaning and truth.
Unlike the traditional viewpoint, - as I treat it as a standpoint of Logical Positivism, according to which unless a sentence can be 'verified' at least in its principle, it is strictly speaking, 'meaningless'. Here the word 'meaningless' or on the contrary' meaningful' can be testified by sentence structure or the experience possibly followed. However, that standpoint leaves a space for a religious, aesthetic, literary languages for those aspects of language usuages should be treat as extremely abstract which does not allows ordinary utterances can be meaning.
In this study, however, the whole scale of semantics should be excluded. Which is
meaningful or which is meaningless or which is true or which is false can net be an issue. Just in the process of learning English conversation, there is an importance how actually the function of language occurs and if not, what would be the extrinsic elements we should bring up in our interests? - will be on the focus.
The great misunderstanding to confront English conversation just as a tool or skill has not been surprising. One of the reasons would be that it was only in recent years that a philosophical approach has been made and developed systematically in the name of 'Pragmatics'. There was a great philosophical figure as Wittgenstein, whose master piece is「Tractates Logics Philosophilous」. (Wittgenstein, 1921) His main idea in this volume can never be oversimplified, but one of its idea has been greatly applied to the theory of 'Pragmatics' in linguistic fields. That is his theory of 'Language games' in which he insisted that utterances ate only explicable in relation to the activities. (Wittgenstein Para, 43, 1958). That idea is in simple meaning, "words play a role to act." - This has become the basic philosophical root concept in supporting 'Pragmatics'.
Other philosophers as Sadock(1974), Fillmore(1971), Tambiah(1978) and Levin(1976) have been deeply interested in this field of linguistic pragmatics but this study will mainly examine the theory of Speech Acts by J. R. Austin(1962) and J. R. Searle(1969) who have been most dealt with in the textbooks of linguistics.
After a brief comparative study of Austin and Searle, a great deal of problematic phenomena is considered and at the latter part of this study the biggest concern of this study is almost clarified - that is, how then we can relate the idea and apply it our actual uses of daily conversation? - Speaking being conscious of the deep structure, implicit phrases of dialogue.
Much efforts have been made to illustrate the practical sample sentence compositions to gain a certain level of delicate, functional conversation skills - grammatically and idiomatically. And lastly on how to keep an idealistic attitude toward globalized communication in the 21st century.
