고대 근동과 구약의 우주 지형도 비교 연구: 하늘, 땅, 지하세계를 중심으로 = The Comparative Study of Cosmic Geography between Ancient Near East and the Old Testament: Focused on Heaven, Earth, Netherworld.

This study explores cosmology of the ANE and the Old Testament. As the cosmology reflects how humanity see and imagine the physical form and structure of the surrounding universe, it demonstrates the world view of the contemporary people. Mesopotamians, Egyptians, Canaanites, and Israelites commonly shared the understanding of the structure of universe with three layers. The upper layer is the heaven, the middle is the earth, and the lower is the netherworld. The heaven is the dwelling place of the gods according to their hierarchical structure. The sky regarded as firmament contains sun, moon, stars. The ANE people recognized that the earth is like a flat disk shape and their dwelling territory is the center of the earth. The ANE people thought that there are netherworld under the earth where the deceased go down. The OT description of the cosmic geography is similar to that of the OT. The OT depicts the shape of the heaven as firmament(Gen 1:7,14,15), the dwelling place of God(Ex 24:10), the vaulted heavens (Job 22:14). The earth has a flat disc shape and is described as the foundation upon the water(Ps 24:2), the pillar of the earth (Job 9:6-7), its cornerstones (Job 38:4-6). The descriptions regarding the netherworld are the realm of the death below(Deut 32:22), going down alive to Sheol(Ps 55:15), the place where the deceased remain. While the cosmic geography of the OT is similar to that of the ANE, there are also differences between the two. The ANE cosmology describes the structure of the universe with its relationship to the polytheistic perspective. However, the OT describes from the perspective of the monotheism that the one God, the creator, governs the universe. The OT attempts to challenge and transform the world view of the surrounding nations with the unique theological ideology. The modern interpreters should be aware of the ideology and world view of the ANE in oder to acquire the mature understanding of the biblical text and interpret it properly. Furthermore, they should suggest the unique theological message of the OT to challenge and transform the world view and culture of this world.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 구약과 고대 근동의 우주 지형도를 비교 연구한 것이다. 우주 지형도는 사람들이 주변 세계의 물리적 형태와 구조를 어떻게 인식했고 상상했는지를 드러내 주기에 그 시대 사람들의 세계관을 반영한다. 메소포타미아인, 애굽인, 가나안인, 그리고 이스라엘 사람들은 공통적으로 우주의 구조를 세 가지 층으로 이해했다. 우주의 상층부는 천상, 중간에는 지구, 하층부에는 지하세계가 있다고 생각했다. 고대 근동인들은 하늘에는 각 신들이 위계질서에 따라 거주하는 위 하늘과 태양, 달, 별과 같은 천체들이 있는 아래 하늘을 구분하였다. 또한 지구의 형태를 평평한 디스크 모양으로 인식했고 자신들의 지역을 지구의 중심이며 수도라고 여겼다. 고대 근동인들의 우주 지형도에는 죽은 자들이 가는 장소인 지하세계가 땅 아래에 위치했다고 생각했다. 구약은 고대 근동의 우주 지형도와 유사한 기술을 한다. 하늘의 모양을 여러 층이 있는 궁창(창 1:7, 14, 15), 하나님이 거하시는 곳(출 24:10), 둥근 하늘(욥 22:14), 천막(사 40:22)과 같은 용어로 묘사한다. 땅의 모양은 평평한 디스크 형태이며 그 터를 바다 위에 세우심(시 24:2), 땅의 기둥 (욥 9:6-7), 땅의 기초들과 모퉁잇돌(욥 38:4-6)로 기술한다, 지하세계에 대해서는 스올의 깊은 곳(신 32:22), 스올에 내려감(시 55:15)과 같이 죽은 자들이 거주하는 장소로 소개한다. 성경의 우주 지형도 묘사는 고대 근동인들의 것과 상당한 유사점을 가진다. 그러나 이스라엘이 관찰한 우주 지형도는 고대 근동인들의 다신론적 사상과는 전혀 다른 유일신 사상과 절대자 하나님의 창조와 주권을 드러낸다. 구약 성경은 고대 근동의 우주 지형도와는 차별화된 신학적 사상으로 주변 민족들의 세계관의 변혁과 도전을 도모했다. 오늘날 성경 해석자들은 칼빈의 계시 적응 사상의 원리에 성경 당대의 문화와 세계관을 숙지할 필요가 있다. 나아가 견고한 본문의 주해를 통해 구약이 말하는 독특한 신학적 메시지를 세상 나라의 세계관과 문화 변혁과 도전을 위해 제시해야할 것이다.
