다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This is a study of Philip Paul Bliss(1838-76), a gospel hymn writer, composer, and sincere full-time music evangelist in the 19th-century America, with his eight gospel hymn texts found in Korean Hymnals of 1983 and 2006.
After a biographical sketch on Bliss, this study is divided into three categories–major theological motifs, expressions, and appraisals on his gospel hymns.
A variety of theological motifs are found in Bliss’s gospel hymns, such as Christ’s atoning death on the cross, His love and care for His people, parental love of God and His promise, Heaven, the witnessing of Holy Spirit, aspiration for sanctification, and peace, rest, and security endowed by Jesus. Regarding expressions, the use of metaphor is the most notable trait, while other poetic devices such as simile and paradox are occasionally employed along. With respect to the usage of personal pronouns, unlike typical gospel hymn writers, Bliss used all three types, since he targeted a variety of objects at the same time in his gospel hymns, resulting in corporate singing.
Moreover, Bliss, in many cases, quoted the Bible verses as they are, teaching Biblical truth and sound Christian doctrine firsthand. This aspect differentiates his hymns from other gospel hymns in concerns and criticisms due to their over-subjectivism and heavy sentimentalism. His gospel hymns can be, therefore, considered one of the effective mediums for believers who need reaffirm their faith in Christ as well as for the lost who needs the Gospel.
As a God’s faithful servant, Bliss’ impress upon the world will go on as it has been through his gospel hymns, making him as an exemplary gospel hymn writer.

기독교 노래의 발전에 있어 미국적인 기여를 보여주는 대표적인 것 중의 하나가 복음 찬송가이다. 이는 여전히 우리 예배에서 많이 불리고 있지만, 그 가사의 피상적인 신학적 깊이와 지나치게 주관적인 측면 때문에 예배 안에서의사용에 대한 우려와 비판이 있어 왔다. 복음 찬송가의 출현에 기여한 대표적인 인물들 중 한 사람이 필립 블리스(Philip P. Bliss 1838-76)인데, 본 연구는 한국 찬송가집에 실린 블리스의 찬송시 분석에 관한 것이다. 먼저, 블리스의 생애에 대해 다룬 다음, 한국 찬송가집에 실린 그의 8편의 찬송시를 통해 블리스의 복음 찬송시의 특징적인 내용을 내용적인 부분과 양식적인 측면으로 나누어 고찰하며 그의 복음 찬송시에 대한 평가와 기여를 살펴본다. 그의 복음 찬송시에 나타난 신학적 주제들은 예수 그리스도를 중심으로 하는 기독론적 모티프가 주를 이루고 그 외에 복음 증거, 천국, 하나님의 사랑, 예수 그리스도를통한 하나님의 구원의 약속, 성령의 증거하심, 성화를 위한 기도, 그리고 예수그리스도를 믿음으로 주어지는 평화, 안식, 안전함 등의 다양한 모티프를 포함하고 있다. 표현 양식적인 측면에서 발견되는 특징은 일상생활에서 흔히 발견되는 단어들을 통한 은유법의 두드러진 사용을 통해 찬송시를 접한 이들에게 친숙함을 제공한다. 동시에 1인칭, 2인칭, 3인칭 대명사를 골고루 사용함으로써 단순히 개인적 체험의 찬송시에서 벗어나 찬송 저자, 성도, 비신자들 동시에 아우르며 찬송시를 읽고 부르는 모든 이들에게 실존적인 접근을 통한 공감을 일으키며 공동체적 고백을 가능하게 한다. 또한, 많은 경우에 성경 구절을 그대로 인용하여 진리의 가르침을 운율화하였으며 예수에 대한 다양한 칭호를 통해 균형 잡힌 기독론적 사고를 가지게 하여 지나치게 개인주의적일 수있는 복음 찬송시에 대한 우려에서 벗어나게 한다. 삶 자체가 본이 되는 신실한 주의 종, 블리스의 복음 찬송시는 다양한 신학적 모티프와 올바른 교리를담고 있어 복음 전파의 목적 뿐 아니라 예수를 향한 그리스도인들의 의지와헌신을 재다짐하는 찬송으로서 예배 찬송과 함께 불려진다면 그 기능과 역할은 효과적으로 수행될 것이다.
