In this article, we presented a method of matching spatial information generated during the annual excavation and investigation process using the ‘Digital photogrammetry’ technique, and attempted an experimental study on how the results could be used.
First, a method of matching spatial information using the ‘Digital photogrammetry’ technique was presented through the case of the southwestern area of the Wanggung-ri Site in Iksan. The spatial information matching method is summarized as a process of securing continuous digital aerial photographs and constructing photogrammetry models by conducting alternative point coordinate surveys that can replace Ground Control Points(GCP) and then reviewing errors in the photogrammetry model. As a result of reviewing errors with 3D precise survey data, it was confirmed that the results of spatial information matching need to be partially supplemented for vertical spatial information, such as sea level, but have considerable precision for horizontal spatial information.
Next, we applied digital photogrammetry techniques to Wangheungsa Temple Site in, Buyeo to match annual spatial information under different conditions into a single photogrammetry model, and examined what archaeological significance could be derived using the results. Spatial information for each point surveyed in different years was built as each annual photogrammetry model after editing, and based on the base photogrammetry model, annual photogrammetry models were merged into one model and the precision and error of the merged model were reviewed.
Such spatial information matching results are useful data with coordinate values, and can be expressed as a Digital Elevation Model(DEM) or contour diagram. In addition, by removing unnecessary topographic information such as banks, pit, and earthen storage through follow-up work, a new contour map close to the topographic information at the time of Wangheungsa Temple's operation was established. This is meaningful in that it is not only possible to estimate how terrain changes have been made from the past to the present compared to modern digital topographic map, but also suggests that various archaeological interpretations can be made based on past topographic information that has not been easily understood by recent maps.
