Purpose This study aims to explore the multidimensional value and role of webtoon platforms within the creative ecosystem from webtoon creators' perspectives. By analyzing postings in webtoon creators’ online communities, this research seeks to understand how platforms influence creators' work, economic conditions, and professional development.
Design/methodology/approach This study collected 6,453 posts from a major webtoon creators’ online communities and analyzed them using various text mining techniques such as frequency analysis (including TF-IDF analysis), topic modeling analysis, and keyword network analysis. This methodology enabled an objective examination of webtoon creators' authentic opinions and experiences regarding webtoon platforms.
Findings The analysis revealed that webtoon platforms provide four key values to creators: (1) lowering industry entry barriers through various debut opportunities, (2) providing technology-based creative environments with AI and digital tools, (3) supporting income generation and IP utilization, and (4) protecting creators' rights through contracts and copyright management. Among these values, creators placed the highest importance on economic relationships with platforms, with revenue distribution and contract conditions.
