This paper is the sequel continued from the last issue, $quot;A Study on Customs of Court Ladies in the Later Yi dynasty.$quot;
Here the followings are dealt with:
1. Birth in the Court,
2. Mother Empress Dowager's Acting Deputy for political Affairs behind the Bamboo Blind indirect regency in case of young Emperor,
3. Marriage of Kings and Crown Princes. The above are selected examples of the ceremonial court customs.
Today it is hard to find these ceremonial court customs after all these years of ruin of the royal society. We know them only by referring to the witnesses of the court ladies ,alive still now and the public records-A Norm on Ceremonies-here they are stated from customary view point.
In custom of birth, much more witch-craft and imprecation form were utilized besides confucian tradition. But it is interesting that in case of birth, neither witch-craft nor imprecation form are now used in the nobility of the capital and country only after half a century later from then in spite of the fact that there are still witchs and blind fortunetellers in woman society.
In our history there were only few cases of indirect regencies but they meant the highest as a woman's participation in politics.
This paper deals with Soon-Won Empress Dowager's indirect regency centering the point to the historical fact come into the open and the human nuance of the back.
Soon-Won Empress happened to take the reins of government for the young Emperor until he was grown up, but in the confucian state of the Yi dynasty it was different from in the Silla where three queens appeared in numbers. Soon-Won Empress herself did not think a woman's participation in politics a fine thing. Eventually she did not regret leaving off her regency. This is different from foreign countries.
Because of the restriction of space, the last subject on marriage of kings and crown princes is not proceeded to the main issue but to its process. The process from the royal marriage meeting to the engagement was inquired into from both standpoints, public and private life.
Even if formal, the royal marriage meeting was held three tunes, after the decision of the candidate, there were still six times' ceremonies called the six ceremony. The numerous names of enormous materials utilized during these six times Ceremonies are sufficient enough to guess how gorgeous marriage it was.
Marriage age was earlier in crown princes than in general princes. It was from nine to twelve or thirteen. From this we can see the court took the initiative in an early marriage more previous than the people. Purely it was a national policy to take over the royal family line
Through these several ceremonial customs, it is evident that first of all coexistence of too kinds of extremes, the old and new were possible in the court. Because the court walls were high enough to seclude the court from society. This seclusion naturally bore conservatism keeping tradition. On the other hand an exchange with China brought foreign civilization carrying new mode into the court. Secondary it is evident that court life of absolute monarchy was able to carry on extremely gorgeous living.
