A Study on Effect of Leisure Activities for Foreign Cabin Crew
- Focused on Leisure Satisfaction, Psychological Well-being, Life Satisfaction -

There is a growing number of foreign cabin crew members from overseas for the purpose of providing language service for foreign passengers as well as reducing cost of labour by domestic airline companies. The number of foreign cabin crew members working in K airline company is reaching to 10% of the total number of cabin crew. However, it was disclosed that the airline companies were lack of research with regard to satisfaction of life and study for foreign cabin crew from different cultures, although they seem to eager to hire right and competent people living abroad to have them work for them.

The background of this study is how foreign cabin crew working for a airline company in Korea can improve life satisfaction against differences between their own country and Korea in terms of life sty le, way of thinking, culture and economics. Knowing these potential problems, leisure activity can be considered one of the important factors for them to feel satisfaction while living in different culture.
The purpose of this study is how the type of leisure activity influences on leisure satisfaction, psychological well-being and life satisfaction. The survey was conducted in K airline company in Korea, from 10th June to 16th June in 2013. 100responses were available out of 130 questionnaires.
The frequency test was used for the purpose of Demographic variables, Factor analysis was applied to analysis of leisure satisfaction, psychological well-being and life satisfaction. Furthermore, Reliability analysis was employed in order to measure reliability for the method. To prove hypotheses, Correlation analysis was made in order to find out a correlation among variables. Regression analysis was employed to find cause and effect.

The major findings of this study were summarized as follows;
Firstly, it was indicted that foreign cabin crew members participated in hobby and entertainment activities and social activities most frequently, and also being involved broadly, though less frequently, in culture and art activities and recreational activities as well, which reflects the characteristics of their occupation and the pattern of their life. For further details, they spent almost everyday using the internet, gathering with friends and relatives, which seems regard as the high frequency. However, they spent watching TV, eating out, having (or developing) relationship most frequently. In sports activity, light exercise such as jogging and walking are mostly enjoyed. It is said that foreign cabin crew members are highly involved in static leisure activities rather than dynamic leisure activities to relieve their emotional and physical exhaustion. It is required that the organization consider the development of leisure programs and the support to engage their employees to take part in variety of culture and art activities.

Secondly, it is indicated that according to demographic characteristics of foreign cabin crew, there is a notable difference in recognition of leisure satisfaction, life satisfaction and psychological well-being. Accordingly, the organizations are needed to have the concern and provide the broader opportunities of leisure activities for their employees with less satisfaction, especially during the period of declining satisfaction. Resultingly, this will help you acquire the customers' satisfaction through service quality control.

Thirdly, as a result of analysis between leisure satisfaction and psychological well-being, psychological satisfaction did have a significant influence on psychological well-being.

Fourthly, in a consequence of analysis between leisure satisfaction and general life satisfaction, environmental satisfaction did have a significant influence on general life satisfaction.

Lastly, as a result with analysis between psychological well-being and general life satisfaction, psychological well-being did significant influence on general life satisfaction.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

외국인 객실승무원의 여가활동유형에 따른 효과분석
- 여가만족, 심리적 행복감, 생활만족을 중심으로 -

본 연구는 최근 증가세를 나타내고 있고 객실에서의 역할도 확대되고 있는 외국인 객실승무원이 국내 항공사에 근무하는 동안 사회문화적인 차이로 인해 겪고 있는 어려움을 극복하고 조직 적응과 유화력을 높여 직무 만족뿐 아니라 심리적 행복감과 전반적 생활의 만족도를 높일 수 있는 방안으로 여가활동의 중요성을 인식하고, 외국인 객실승무원을 대상으로 그들이 참여하는 여가활동유형을 알아보고, 여가활동유형과 여가만족, 심리적 행복감, 전반적 생활만족도 간의 영향관계를 실증적으로 조사·연구하는데 그 목적이 있다.

조사기간은 2013년 6월 16일부터 6월 30일까지 15일간이며, 국내 K항공사의 외국인 객실승무원을 대상으로 총 200부의 설문지를 분석하였다. 표본의 인구통계학적 특성을 분석하기 위해서는 빈도분석을 실시하였고 외국인 객실승무원의 여가만족과 심리적 행복감, 전반적 생활만족도의 세부항목들을 영역별로 분류하기 위하여 요인분석(Factor analysis)을 실시하였으며, 측정도구에 대한 신뢰도를 파악하기 위하여 신뢰도분석(Reliability analysis)을 실시하였다. 또한, 각 변수간의 상관성을 측정하기 위하여 상관관계(Correlation)분석을 실시하였고, 변수들 간의 인과 관계를 파악하는 회귀분석(Regression analysis)을 활용하여 가설을 검증하였다.

본 연구의 실증분석 결과 및 시사점을 서술하면 다음과 같다.
첫째, 외국인 객실승무원의 여가 활동 참여도와 여가 활동 유형별 세부 선택 현황을 살펴보면 가장 많은 선택을 한 취미·오락활동의 경우 인터넷을 즐기는 경우가 가장 많았으며, 음악 감상, 친구모임, 쇼핑, 외식, 사진 등이 선택되어 대체적으로 다양한 분야의 여가활동을 즐기는 것으로 나타났다. 관람·관광의 경우 해외여행의 항목이 가장 많았으며, 바닷가 또는 교외로 나가 관광을 즐긴다는 답변이 높은 비율을 차지하였다. 그 밖에 휴식 분야의 경우, TV 시청, 사교활동 분야에서는 가족방문 및 전화․문자․카카오 톡이 많았고, 문화·예술 분야의 경우 독서가 높이 선택되었다. 스포츠 활동 중에서는 Jogging/Walking을 가장 많이 선택하여 외국인 객실승무원의 여가활동유형은 직업 특성과 생활 패턴을 반영하는 것으로 나타났다.

둘째, 외국인 객실승무원의 인구통계학적 특성에 따라 여가만족, 생활만족, 심리적 행복감에 대한 인식도에 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 타이랜드와 말레이시아 국적의 객실승무원의 심리적 행복감과 생활만족이 가장 높게 나타난 반면 베트남과 몽골 국적의 객실승무원은 비교적 낮은 심리적 행복감과 생활 만족도를 보인 것으로 나타났다.

셋째, 여가만족과 심리적 행복감간의 관계를 검증한 결과 여가만족의 요인 중 심리적 만족이 심리적 행복감에 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다.

넷째, 여가만족과 전반적 생활만족도간의 관계를 검증한 결과 여가만족의 요인 중 심리적 만족, 환경적 만족이 전반적 생활만족도에 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다.

다섯째, 심리적 행복감과 전반적 생활 만족도 간의 관계를 검증한 결과 심리적 행복감은 전반적 생활 만족도에 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다.
