The aim of this paper is to investigate the syntactic and semantic properties of Short Form Confirmatives(SFC's) and the functions of negative 'an' occuring in SFC's in Eastern Chonnam Dialect. Although the syntactic forms of SFC's are the same as of negative interrogatives, the function of SFC's is to provide an affirmative proposition to listener to confirm certain events or situations. The pragmatic affix 'an' of SFC's means that speaker's supposition is not in accordance with the actual situation in a given conversation There are several types SFC's with a marked type having two or more 'an's' in a single sentence, and no other 'an's'.
