Aerosols are known to play a significant role in air quality and climate. They are associated with environmental issues by causing atmospheric pollution and inducing changes in the radiative balance through scattering or absorption of solar radiation. PM2.5 is used as an indicator of atmospheric pollution, and radiative forcing is utilized as a metric to quantify its impact on radiative balance. In this study, we aimed to understand the impact of aerosols on air quality and climate change at various spatial and temporal scales by using novel data that provide quantitative information on gridded aerosols. Regarding PM2.5 research, the feasibility of using MERRA-2 reanalysis data was examined, and the geostationary satellite GEMS was used to estimate the hourly radiative forcing. The estimated PM2.5 using MERRA-2 reanalysis data showed spatial distribution similar to ground observations throughout the entire study period (2015-2021), but exhibited significant uncertainties, particularly in heavily polluted urban aeras. It was observed that MERRA-2 exhibited significant seasonal discrepancies such as overestimation and underestimation, compared to ground observations. Through a comparison of PM2.5 composition, it was identified that there is uncertainty in emission information. In this study, we focus on the possibility of underestimation during winter due to the absence of nitrates. It was found that considering nitrates helped alleviate the differences between ground observations and MERRA-2. For future evaluations of Korean air quality using MERRA-2, it appears necessary to devise alternative estimation methods that can mitigate both overestimation and underestimation through various sensitivity test. The estimated time-dependent radiative forcing using GEMS data showed variability, similar to the temporal changes in AOD, with higher values observed in the early morning and late afternoon, and lower values near noon. Negative radiative forcing was primarily observed at the surface and at the top of the atmosphere. The estimated radiative forcing, compared to ground-based data, exhibited relatively lower quantitative values, but it is expected to improve through future algorithm enhancements and improvements in data accuracy. This study provides insights into how the MERRA-2 and GEMS data can be utilized for air quality assessment in relation to PM2.5 and radiative forcing, contributing to its research significance.
