Clinical observations on the effect of initial intensive prednisolone therapy and followed by maintenance prophylactic long-term administration to 8 children with nephrotic syndrome seen during interval July, 1966 to April, 1968 has been made.
Serial physical check and laboratory works were made on each patients before or after administration of prednisolone and on discharge.
Results are summarized as follow :
1. Oral prednisolone in dose of 20∼30㎎ per day for 3 weeks(or more than 4 weeks) courses as a initial therapy produced remarkable diuresis in all children and followed by improvement of blood and urinary chemistry in 7 cases. No urine protein was found on discharge among three children.
2. Ralapses were observed in two cases after 2 1/2 and 3 months of remission, one followed URI with sinusitis, the other was tonsillitis. Prednisolone long-term maintenance therapy with 5㎎ per day led to rapid remission and prevented further relapses.
3. There was no special side effect from the use of prednisolone except occasionally showed visible hyperemia on the cheek, cheerful mood and increased appetite during the intensive initial therapy.
4. Though the follow-up study was not completed yet, the use of prednisolone therapy seems to be an effective management to the nephrotic syndrome in children, and impress that long-term maintenance therapy could prevent relapse without hazardous side effect.
