The evolution of ecological thinking established the concept of ‘sustainable development’. The background of this study is that such thinking and development are absolutely not new concepts from the aspect of Oriental thinking. The purpose of this study is exploring the possibility of sustainable architectural space in Korean traditional architectural space through the characteristics and ecological design concept.
The characteristics of sustainable architecture in traditional space are identified through Oriental thinking by classifying them into ‘existence and non-existence are relative concepts’ (有無相生), synchronization of time and space, autonomous generation and change/circulation. The traditional space as ecological and sustainable architecture pursues its possibility by having nature and artificiality coexist rather than separating them. The introduction and expression of nature in traditional architectural space have the goal of coexisting with nature. The circulation of nature supports the sustainability possibility of nature, space and men by its excellency in energy efficiency and economics.
Since the object of this study was limited, there was limitation in exploring the characteristics of sustainable architecture in traditional space from the viewpoint of ecology. It is expected that there would be more possibilities in change and expression characteristic dependent on the expression method and viewpoint of sustainable architectural characteristics from the viewpoint of ecology. More various studies are expected in the future.
