필록테테스의 활과 아테네의 재정 위기 = The Bow of Heracles in the Philoctetes of Sophocles and the Financial Crisis of Athens

국문 초록 (Abstract)

소포클레스의 『필록테테스』는 기원전 409년 펠로폰네소스 전쟁 막바지에 공연되었다. 이 극에서 필록테테스의 활은 스물네 번이나 언급될 정도로 중요한 것, 그리스 군이 트로이아에 승리하는 데 없어서는 안 되는 필수적인 것으로 나온다. 이 활이 무엇을 의미하는가에 대해서는, ‘인간의 지성(man’s intelligence)’ ‘영웅의 업적’ ‘비의 제례의 성물’ 등등의 다양한 의견들이 있었다. 이 글은 그것이 당시 그리스 정치가 알키비아데스가 끌어올 수 있다고 공언하였던 페르시아 측의 자금을 의미하는 것은 아닐까 하는 점을 당시 아테네의 심각하였던 재정 상황을 살펴보면서 논증한 글이다.
필록테테스가 공연될 당시의 아테네의 재정 상태는 시칠리아 원정 대 실패의 여파로 매우 긴급한 상태에 있었다. 이 극이 공연되기 두 해 전인 411년에는, 오랫동안 이어져왔던 민주정이 무너지고 400인 의회 및 5000인 정부라는 과두정체가 성립되었을 만큼, 아테네의 재정 위기는 컸다. 이를 잘 알고 있었던 알키비아데스는 자신이야말로 당시 스파르타의 군자금을 내어주던 페르시아의 자금을 아테네로 끌어올 수 있다고 공언하고 있었다. 물론 결과적으로 알키비아데스는 페르시아의 자금을 끌어오지 못하였지만, 이 극의 공연 무렵의 아테네인 가운데서는 알키비아데스 및 알키비아데스가 끌어올 페르시아의 자금 만이 아테네를 구원해주고, 예전의 찬란한 ‘제국’을 이어나갈 수 있다고 믿던 이들이 많았다. 소포클레스도 그 가운데 한 사람으로, 이러한 자신의 신념을 ‘필록테테스의 활’이라는 소재를 통해서 피력하였으며, 그 해의 비극 경연에서 이극이 일등상을 받았다는 것은 많은 아테네인들이 이에 동조하고 있었던 것이 아닐까 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The Philoctetes of Sophocles was performed in 409 BC when the Peloponnesian War was in its last years. In this play, the bow of Heracles is mentioned for 24 times, and without this bow (and present owner Philoctetes), the Greeks could not gain a victory against Trojans. Scholars tried to figure out what the bow of Heracles meant. Their interpretations were diverse: for someone, it meant ‘man`s intelligence’, for others, ‘friendship between heroes’ or a sacred thing for a mysterious cult, etc. In my opinion, however, the bow of Heracles symbolized the money from Persia. In this paper, I try to argue this point analyzing the historical context, especially reviewing the deep economic crisis in Athens at that time. This study is based on the argument that Philoctetes in the Philoctetes meant Alcibiades, as some scholars suggested.
During the years around the performance of the Philoctetes, the Athenians were financially suffering the hardest times: after the disaster of the Sicilian Expedition Athens experienced the greatest panic, and in 411 BC their polity was even altered from democracy to oligarchy of 400 and, in succession, 5,000 members due to this crisis. Knowing that situation very well, Alcibiades avowed to the Athenians that he could draw money from Persia. Thus, many Athenians hoped that Alcibiades could do it and that with this, they could win the war and continue to manage their empire like good old days. In my opinion, Sophocles was one of them and he tried to persuade Athenians to call back Alcibiades to Athens: only with the money from Persia they could win the Peloponnesian War just as only with the bow of Heracles the Greeks could take victory over Troy.
