사회복지실천과 영성: ‘영성복지’의 이론화 작업의 일환으로 = Social Welfare Practice and Spirituality: As Part of the Theorization of ‘Spiritual Welfare’

This study was attempted from the perspective that modern social welfare now needs a shift from economic welfare-based welfare to spiritual welfare focusing on spirituality. Welfare is not enough for the socially disadvantaged to simply receive economic, material, and cultural benefits, but it is possible when they are based on spiritual awareness to lead their own lives on their own. Although the concept of spirituality has a large difference between Christian theology, which defines it as a transcendental gift, and the New Age, which is seen as the realization of the divine potential of human existence, that is, man's efforts for self-salvation, there seems to be a point where they meet each other from the perspective that spirituality values the field of human life. Social welfare practices view spirituality as a single human experience, development, and environmental dimension, leading to changes in individual consciousness through spiritual growth, and further increased responsibility for the well-being of their families, societies and ecosystems. In particular, the holistic view of spirituality, which is the unity of mind-body-spirit, is a core foundational idea in social welfare practice. There is a spirit in all, and the spirit has the meaning that it is the bond that binds the human mind and body, cosmic nature and human beings. The meaning of spirituality has recently expanded beyond the level of individual privateness to the so-called social and public sphere. According to this trend, the academic sphere of spirituality has not only philosophy and psychology but also the social science beyond the boundaries of theology and religion, showing the possibility of turning to spiritual welfare. However, despite the fact that the basis of spiritual welfare is holistic, the body seems to be neglected compared to the mind and spirit, and so was the interest in the relationship with the family, environment, and nature surrounding the client. Although spiritual welfare is not yet an established term in academia, above all, the new spiritual movement shows the significance of being able to ultimately contribute to social integration in that it has the prospect of forming a healthy society through healthy individuals.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 현대의 사회복지가 경제에 바탕을 둔 복지를 넘어 영성에 초점을 두는 영성복지로의 전환이 필요하다는 관점에서 시도되었다. 복지는 사회적 약자들이 단순히 경제적 물질적 문화적 혜택을 제공 받는 것만으로는 충분하지 않고, 그들 스스로 주체적으로 자신의 삶을 영위하려는 영적 자각에 기반할 때 해결될 수 있는 것이다. 영성의 개념은 초월주의 은사로 규정하는 기독교 신학과 인간 존재가 가지고 있는 신성한 잠재력의 실현, 다시 말해서 인간의 자기 구원의 노력으로 본 뉴에이지 간 차이가 크지만 영성이 인간의 삶의 현장을 중시한다는 점에서는 서로 만나는 지점이 있어 보인다. 사회복지실천에서는 영성을 하나의 인간적 경험, 발달 및 환경 차원으로 접근하면서 영적 성장을 통한 개인의식의 변화, 더 나아가 그들 가족, 사회 그리고 생태계의 복지에 대한 책임 증가로 이어진다고 본다. 특히 마음·몸·영의 일체라는 전인적 영성관은 사회복지실천에서도 핵심 기반 사상이 되고 있다. 영성이 개인의 마음과 몸에 긴밀히 연결되어 있어서 마음을 깨우치거나 몸을 변화시키는 두 가지 작용 모두에 영(spirit)의 존재가 있고, 영은 인간의 마음과 몸, 우주 자연과 인간을 하나로 묶는 끈이라는 의미를 갖는다. 최근 영성의 의미는 개인의 사사로움의 차원을 넘어 이른바 사회적 및 공적 영역에까지 확장되고, 이 추세에 따라 영성의 학문 영역은 신학이나 종교학의 경계를 넘어 철학, 심리학은 물론이고 사회과학의 영역 역시 포괄하고 있어, 영성복지로의 방향 전환의 가능성이 드러난다. 그러나 영성복지의 기반이 전인주의임에도 불구하고 심리, 정신, 마음 등에만 집중하면서 ‘몸’을 소홀히 하고, 동시에 클라이언트가 맺고 있는 가족, 친지, 환경, 자연과의 관계에 대해서도 별로 주목하지 않은 것으로 나타난다. 아직 영성복지는 학계에서 정립된 용어는 아니지만 무엇보다 새로운 영성운동은 건강한 개인을 통해 건강한 사회를 형성하면서 궁극적으로 사회통합에 기여할 수 있다는 의의를 보여준다.
