Although indirect injury of the musculocutaneous nerve is rare due to anatomical features, it occurs in various situations. Postoperative injury of the musculocutaneous nerve is extremely rare complication.
We present the case of a 20-year-old male who complained of numbness and weakness of right arm after ankle surgery. Electrodiagnostic studies revealed right musculocutaneous neuropathy with significant axonal injury. Physical therapy for ankle including elbow flexor muscle strengthening exercises was conducted. Numbness and weakness of right arm gradually improved, and the 6-month follow-up electrodiagnostic studies showed recovery of musculocutaneous neuropathy. Literature review was performed focusing on the indirect musculocutaneous nerve injury following surgeries unrelated to upper extremity.
This report focuses on the indirect musculocutaneous nerve injury with axonotmesis following ankle surgery. Proper positioning would be important to prevent nerve injury during surgery.
