자사주 매입공시의 주가반응에 관한 실증 연구 - 문화콘텐츠 기업을 중심으로 - = The Effects of Stock Repurchase Announcements on the Stock Prices of the Korean Culture Contents Firms

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 문화콘텐츠 산업을 대상으로 자사주 매입공시에 대한 주가반응을 살펴본다. 이를 통해 자사주 매입의 주요 동기로 알려진 저평가가설이 문화콘텐츠 기업에 있어서도 성립하는지 검증하였다. 분석결과, 문화콘텐츠 기업들이 자사주 매입을 공시하는 경우, 기존 연구들 및 전체시장을 분석한 경우와는다른 주가반응이 발견되었다. 문화콘텐츠 산업에서는 공시 이전에는 주가의 저조한 성과가 일관되게 발견되지 않았으며, 공시 이후에는 주가의 지속적인 상승 반응이 나타나지 않았다. 이는 전체시장에서의주가반응과는 다르게 저평가가설을 지지하지 않는 모습이다. 이러한 결과는 문화콘텐츠 산업에 종사하는 기업 경영자들이 자사주 매입과 관련한 재무정책을 활용함에 있어서 신중할 필요성을 제기하여 주며, 아울러 주식시장 투자자들의 투자의사결정에도 시사점을 제공하여 준다.

This paper investigates the stock price behavior around stock repurchase announcements, focusing on the Korean culture contents industry. This test allows us to examine whether the undervaluation hypothesis does hold for firms in this industry. We find stock returns do not increase significantly after the stock repurchase announcements and do not exhibit negative returns consistently before the announcements. Unlike in the KOSDAQ market with various industries, the results do not support the undervaluation hypothesis in the culture contents industry. Our findings suggest culture contents companies’ managers should be careful when making financial strategies using the stock repurchase. We expect this paper can enhance the interest and attention of investors in the stock markets.
