The life expectancy of Koreans has been increasing quite rapidly in recent years. This, of course, has greatly increased the percentage of the aged 65 years or older. Proportion of the elderly in Korea was 7.2% of all Korean populations in 2000 and it is expected to reach approximately 14.0% in 2018, meaning that Korea will have evolved from an "aging society" to an "aged society" in only 18 years. In the case of other countries, this same transformation has generally taken 2 to 5 times longer.
The proportion of elderly physicians is also increasing, and according to the Korean Medical Association, there are currently 3,600 physicians who have retired from their active works due to old age. 13,621 physicians with age over 60 are working now, but many of them will also be soon leaving from their medical activities.
After retirement, many senior Physicians remain active well, and want to share their time and expertise, but aren"t sure where to start. One survey done in early 2008, more than 6 out of 10 (62.5%) of senior korean physicians wanted to continue their work including community service.
The purpose of this study was to construct a system in the Korean Medical Association to help its senior members actualize their dreams. In doing so, investigators studied the laws and policies of the Korean government for senior citizens and reviewed the related articles. We also benchmarked experiences of national medical associations of other countries such as the AMA Senior Physicians Group and Doctor Bank of Japan.
Major activity of the KMA Doctors Senior Club will be constructing a system connecting supply and demand of retired physicians. Once it is constructed, the retired physicians can be effectively utilized for charity clinics, overseas dispatches for medical services, medical institution assessments, evaluation and review activities of the Health Insurance Review Agency (HIRA), student health consultations and counseling, the medical education support, and so on.
One other important purpose of the Doctors Senior Club is to support projects of interest to the senior physician community, including continued communication with their colleagues, advocacy on behalf of senior physician issues, and ongoing development of member benefits and activities of the KMA.
