Rapid progress has been made in the field of EPS(Electric Power Steering), as the EPS system is superior to conventional hydraulic power steering system in the aspect of fuel economy, environmental preservation and assembly convenience, and it forms the foundation for intelligent vehicle such as electric vehicle, active steering and steer by wire. The EPS system is composed of torque sensor, ECU. motor, gears and etc. Among the elements, torque sensor is one of the core technologies of which output signal is used for main input of EPS controller. In this paper, development of a unique torque sensor is introduced. In the first place, patents related to torque sensor were investigated. Capacitive type torque sensor is concluded to be suitable for EPS because its output is accurate, linear and robust against the variance of temperature, and patents have not applied so much. Torque sensor composed of metal plate in housing and detection rings around input shaft and out shaft is designed and tested to investigate its feasibility.
