      다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Is it possible to translate poetry, especially Korean poetry, into English? Why are most translations of poetry considered transgression not translation? What is lost and found in literary translation? The problems of translating Korean poetry into English are twofold: the words and meaning on the one hand, the rhythm, form, and flow on the other. Rethinking the problems of translating poetry from untranslatability to translatability, this paper examines the process of translation practice and criticism based upon personal experiences. Following my own trail as a translatorteachercritic, this paper focuses on the process and importance of interpretation in translation and suggests the need to problematize and redefine faithfulness, transparency, readability, and creativity in poetry translation. My argument here is that firstly, when we translate Korean poetry into English, it is important not to erase ambiguities of the original text. Especially in poetry translation, readability sometimes clashes with faithfulness and creativity goes with faithfulness, not against it, betraying the general assumptions of translation. My second argument is that both translation and translation criticism need to be reconsidered as the everchanging space of interpretation where real and imagined communities of understanding and evaluation participate in many different ways in the generation of new forms of texts, knowledge, new relationships to language and culture. Translation, in its nature, is destined to betray itself and wait for an alternative at the very moment of its birth. Literary translation is not exclusively about words, it is also a telling example of the way words and worlds can intersect, clash, and be recreated. In the process of analyzing translation practice, the matrix of translation culture is lightly touched and the questions concerning cultural identities and translation subjectivity are also entailed. Rethinking the space of translation as the site for active exchanges of ideas and ideology embedded in language, translation education as the positive process for literary criticism, comparative literature, and cultural interchange, this essay goes toward reclaiming literary translation as the space that finds, reforms, and preserves works that might otherwise be lost.
