영화 <코코>에 담긴 소통적기억의 제례 = Ritual as ‘Communicative Memory’ in the Film Coco

국문 초록 (Abstract)

영화 <코코>는 ‘공동체’와 ‘기억’이라는 주제로 전 세대 관객들의 공감과 감동을 끌 어냈다. 영화는 소년 미겔의 성장과 가족 간의 화해를 표면에 내세우고 있지만, 그를 둘러싼 시·공간은 세대와 세대 간의 연결고리를 만들어 내며 금기와 전통의 문제, 기억과 소통의 문제로까지 이야기를 확장한다. 멕시코의 전통 축제 ‘죽은 자의 날’을 배경으로 벌어지는 이야기는 삶의 경계를 넘어선 미겔이 죽음의 공간에서 마주한 자기의 본래 모습을 찾는 여정으로 구성된다. 현실의 미겔과 그의 가정은 ‘죽은 자의 날’을 기념하지만, 정작 특정 기억을 지우려 애쓰는 ‘기억의 살해’ 속에 살아간다. 영화는 기억의 복원이야말로 정체성의 회복이자 타인과의 소통을 가능케 하는 것임을 확인시킨다. 본 논문은 ‘죽은 자의 날’이라는 제례가 바흐친의 카니발에서처럼 등장인물들을 기억의 복원과 소통으로 이끌고 있음을 확인하였다.

The film Coco resonated with audiences of all ages with its themes of ‘community’ and ‘memory.’ While the film presents the surface narrative of Miguel's growth and reconciliation within his family, the surrounding time and space create a connections of connections between generations, expanding the story to address taboo and tradition, as well as issues of
memory and communication. The story, set against the backdrop of Mexico’s traditional festival, the ‘Day of the Dead,’ unfolds as Miguel transcends the boundaries of life, encountering his true self in the realm of death — a journey to find his original identity. Miguel and his family in reality commemorate the ‘Day of the Dead,’ yet they live within the paradox of striving to erase specific memories in the ‘murder of memory.’ The film affirms that the restoration of memory is crucial for reclaiming identity and enabling communication with others. This paper confirms that, according to Bakhtin’s carnival theory, the ritual of ‘Day of the Dead’ leads the characters to restoration of memory and communication.
