일제강점기 궁궐 내 한-양 절충식 실내장식 도입 배경과 창덕궁 내전 벽지의 양식적 특성 규명 = Background and Stylistic Characteristics of The Joseon-Western Eclectic Interior Decoration: Wallpaper of Changdeokgung Palace during the Japanese Colonial Period

국문 초록 (Abstract)

연구배경 본 연구에서는 조선식 왕실 생활문화와 서양식 미적 취향의 결합이라는 관점에서 근대전환기 서양실내양식이 수용된 경위와 당시 실내장식에 대한 인식의 변화상을 살펴보고, 최근의 조사를 통하여 발굴된 창덕궁 내전 영역의 벽지를 중심으로 양식적 특성을 규명하고자 하였다. 이를 통해 조선식 궁궐 전각 내를 서양식으로 조성하는 한양 절충 실내장식이 지닌 의미와 조형적 특성을 조망해보고자 하였다.
연구방법 조형적 특성 분석에 앞서 궁궐 내 서양 벽지의 수용과정을 알아보기 위해 선행 연구와 당시 신문기사를 통하여 일제강점기 서양 실내장식에 대한 사회적 인식과 조선 궁궐의 성격변화를 살펴보았다. 분석 단계에서는 동일한 조형성을 지닌 동시대 영국에서 제작된 벽지와 비교분석이 이루어졌다. 분석대상과 비교군 간 고유한 양식적 특징을 드러내는 세부 요소들을 교차로 확인하면서 공통된 특징들을 추출하였고, 이에 기반하여 양식에 대한 해석을 시행하였다.
연구결과 창덕궁 내전의 절충식 실내공간 조성에 사용된 벽지에서 프랑스풍 벽지가 가장 큰 비중을 차지하고있음이 확인되었다. 이 밖에도 동시대 영국풍으로 지칭되었던 고딕과 중세 리바이벌 경향의 벽지 디자인, 향후모던디자인으로 연계되는 아트앤크래프트 양식, 아르데코 양식의 벽지가 함께 사용되어 한양 절충의 방식에 있어 당대 유럽에서 유행하던 양식들이 다양하게 변주되어 활용되었음을 알 수 있다.
결론 한양 절충식 실내장식은 한국만이 지닌 정치적, 경제적 전환의 상황 속에서 나타난 복합적인 문화산물이다. 이는 고종이 근대국가의 상징적 표상으로 채택하였던 서구 실내양식과는 성격을 달리하는 것으로 이를통해 서구화로 달라진 궁정생활 방식과 생활 미적 취향 요소가 궁궐에 반영되어 가는 과정을 살펴볼 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Background In this study, We study the Western style interior decoration of Changdeokgung Palace accepted during the transition to modern times. At that time, the public’s awareness of Western-style interior decoration was growing, and the Joseon royal family was combining traditional court lifestyle with Western aesthetic tastes. We try to identify the stylistic characteristics of the wallpaper in the Heejeongdang and Deajojeon of Changdeokgung Palace, built in 1920. Through this, We extract the meaning and formative characteristics of the interior decoration of combining Joseon and Western style.
Methods We researched previous studies and newspaper articles at the time to find out the process of acceptance of Western wallpaper in the Joseon royal palace. Through this, We was able to confirm the social perception of Western interior decoration and changes in the character of Joseon palaces during the Japanese colonial period. In the analysis stage, We conducted a comparative analysis with wallpaper produced in the UK at the same time and had the same formative properties. We cross checked detailed elements with unique stylistic characteristics between the Changdeokgung Palace sample and the comparison group and extracted common features.
Results French style wallpaper was used most often in the construction of the Joseon-Western style interior space of Changdeokgung Palace. There were also wallpaper designs with a Gothic and medieval revival trend, which were referred to as contemporary British styles. Although rare cases, Art & Craft style and Art Deco style wallpaper, which continued with 20th century modern design, were used.
As a result, styles popular in Europe at the time were used in various variations to achieve a compromise between Joseon and Western styles.
Conclusions The Joseon-Western eclectic interior decoration is a complex cultural result of South Korea’s unique political and economic transition. This is different from the Western interior style that King Gojong adopted as a symbol of the modern empire. The wallpapers of Changdeokgung Palace are valuable as an example of the process by which Western elements in palace interior decoration were transformed into elements of aesthetic taste in daily life.
