아리스토텔레스의 선택개념 = The Concept of Aristotle's prohairesis

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문의 목적은 아리스토텔레스의 선택개념을 해명하는 것이다. 아리스토텔레스의 설명에 따르면, 선택은 비이성적 요소인 욕구와 이성적 요소인 심사숙고의 결합이라는 이중구조를 가지고 있다. 좋은 선택은 올바른 이성과 올바른 욕구의 결합이며, 이것은 성취되어야 할 목적에 대한 파악과 그 목적을 성취하도록 하는 수단에 대한 파악을 논리적으로 함의한다. 아리스토텔레스는 선택이 본질적으로 이중적이며 또 영혼의 이성적 부분과 비이성적 부분 둘 다의 활동의 결과이기 때문에 이성 혹은 욕구 중의 어느 하나라도 바르지 못하면 선택도 잘못된다는 것을 보여 주고 있다. 아리스토텔레스는 '프로하이레시스'라는 그리스어를 당시의 통상적인 의미로부터 전문적인 철학어휘로 승격시키는 가운데 윤리적으로 중립적인 단순한 행동이 아니라 도덕적 평가의 대상이 되는 행동, 다시 말해서 그 자체 본질적인 도덕적 가치를 가지며 도덕적 책임의 소재가 될 수 있는 행동의 의미를 매우 정밀하게 규정하고 있다. 일반적으로 의지의 개념은, 아리스토텔레스 이후 11세기라는 오랜 동안의 철학적 반성이 있은 다음에야 즉 아우구스티누스에 와서야 비로소 고안되었다고 알려져 있다. 물론 아리스토텔레스의 어떤 표현도 '의지의 자유'라는 표현에 상응하지 않는 것은 사실이다. 그러나 칭찬과 비난은 인간이 선택한 행동에 국한된다는 아리스토텔레스의 통찰은 선택의 개념 안에서 의지의 개념이 싹트고 있었다는 것을 뒷받침해준다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The aim of this paper is to clarify the concept of Aristotle's prohairesis(choice). According to Aristotle, prohairesis is composed of orexis(desire) and bouleusis(deliberation). Orexis is irrational element and bouleusis is rational element. A good prohairesis is composed of right reason and right desire. This implies that not only the grasp of aim should be right but also grasp of means should be right. Aristotle argues that prohairesis is not right if either reason or desire is not right. Because prohairesis is both activity of irrational soul and rational soul.
Aristotle very accurately defines the concept of praxis(chosen action), raising the status of prohairesis from the ordinary meaning to the philosophical vocabulary. Only the praxis have the moral value and we should ask moral responsibility only for the praxis. It is generally admitted that the concept of the will is conceived by Augustin. But Aristotle's insight that we can praise and blame only for the praxis supports the contention that the concept of the will spring up in the concept of Aristotle's prohairesis.
