The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between mother's discipline style and their child's self-concept. To meet this purpose the four research questions were set up as follows;
1) Is there any difference in mother's discipline style according to their back grounds factors such as age, job, education?
2) Is there any difference in mother's discipline style according to child's gender
3) Is there any difference in child's self-concept according to mother's discipline style?
4) Is there any interaction effect between mother's discipline style and with the child's gender in developing child's self-concept?
The subjects of this study were 80 children and their mothers. Mother's discipline styles includ were power assertion, love, withdrawal and induction.
Children were five-year-old kindergarteners in Jeon nam province. In order to investigate mother's discipline style, the questionnaire method was used.
The tool used for this study was kim Dong-pa(2000)'s discipline style questionnaire which translatle hoffman and Sotzstein(1967)
Child's self-concept was measurrd by kim, Jae-Bong(1987)'s pictorial materials named "I feel me feel" developed by Bently & Yeatts. This was translated and adapted by kim, Jae-Bong(1987). Child's self- concept was individually interviewed. The data were analyzed by mean, x²test, one way ANOVA and two way ANOVA using a SPSS computer program.
The results of this study are as follows:
1) There is no significant difference in mother's discipline styles according to age, and job But there is significant difference according to mother's education .
2) There is significant difference between male and female.
3) There is significant difference between social region of self- concept and mother's discipline style.
4) In physical area of self-concept, there is significant interaction between gender and disciple style.
