여성영웅소설 <백학선전>에 나타난 남성인물 형상과 의미 = Figures and Meanings of Male Characters in Female Hero Novels Baekhakseonjeon

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 여성영웅소설의 인물형상에 관한 논의가 여성주인공을 해석하는데 편중 되어 있어, 여성영웅소설 속 ‘남성인물’들에 대해서는 심도 있게 논의되지 못하고 있다는 문제의식에서 시작되었다. 그리하여 본 연구에서는 여성영웅소설인 <백학선전> 속에서 남성인물들이 어떤 모습으로 형상화되고 있는지 살핀 후, <백학선전> 속 남성인물 형상이 지니는 의미를 고찰해 보았다. 조은하의 반려자인 유백로는 영웅이 될 수 있는 뛰어난 자질을 갖추고 있었지만, 조은하에 대한 사랑에 눈이 멀어 영웅이 되지 못한 인물이다. 최국양은 권력을 탐하는 악인이며, 충신 집안의 자손인 유백로가 자신이 권력을 휘두르는데 방해가 될 것이라고 생각하고 전쟁에 내보내어 제거하려 했다. 또한 최국양이 조은하와 그녀의 가문에 저지른 악행은 최국양 가문의 종속과 번영을 위한 욕망이 악행의 동인으로 작동하고 있었다. <백학선전>에 등장하는 남성 보조인물인 황제와 마대영은 서사 속에서 남녀 주인공의 충절을 인정하는 인물로 형상화되고 있다. 조은하가 여성임을 숨기지 않고 전장에 나가 군사를 지휘하고 영웅적 활약을 펼칠 수 있었던 것은 황제가 조은하의 충절을 인정해주었기 때문이며, 유백로가 목숨을 부지할 수 있었던 것도 마대영이 유백로가 충신임을 알아보았기 때문이다. <백학선전>의 조은하는 열녀의 면모를 보여주는 여성영웅으로, <백학선전>에 등장하는 남성인물들은 이러한 조은하의 열행과 충의를 강조하는 방식으로 형상화되었다. 이를 통해 <백학선전> 속 남성인물들 형상 속에는 여성영웅 조은하의 열행과 충의를 강조하고 부각하고자 하는 의도가 내재되어 있ᅌᅳᆷ을 확인할 수 있다. 또한 최국양은 통속적 흥미보다는 교훈성을 강화하려는 목적으로 형상화된 남성인물이다. 이러한 점에서 <백학선전>은 최국양처럼 가문의 존속을 열망하는 악인을 내세우고, 그 처벌을 보여줌으로써 개인적 욕망이 지나쳐 사회 질서를 어지럽혀서는 안 된다는 것을 말하고 있는 작품이라고 할 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study began with an awareness of the problem that discussions on character traits in female hero novels are focused on interpreting female protagonists, and that ‘male characters’ in female hero novels are not discussed in depth. Therefore, in this study, we looked at how male characters are portrayed in Baekhakjeonjeon, a female hero novel, and then examined the meaning of the male characters in Baekhaejeonjeon.
Jo Eun-ha’s companion, Yoo Baek-ro, had outstanding qualities to become a hero, but was blinded by her love for Jo Eun-ha and failed to become a hero. Choi Guk-yang was a wicked man who was greedy for power, and he thought that Yoo Baek-ro, a descendant of a loyal family, would interfere with his ability to wield power, so he tried to get rid of him by sending him to war. In addition, the evil deeds that Choi Guk-yang committed against Jo Eun-ha and her family were driven by Choi Guk-yang’s family’s desire for subordination and prosperity. The male auxiliary characters, Emperor and Ma Dae-yeong, who appear in Baekhaejeonjeon are depicted as characters who recognize the loyalty of the male and female protagonists in the narrative. The reason Jo Eun-ha was able to go to the battlefield, lead the army, and perform heroic acts without hiding that she was a woman was because the emperor recognized Jo Eun-ha’s loyalty, and the reason Yu Baek-ro was able to save her life was because Ma Dae-yeong knew that Yu Baek-ro was a loyal subject.
Jo Eun-ha in Baekhaejeonjeon is a female hero who shows the aspects of a virtuous woman, and the male characters that appear in Baekhaejeonjeon are portrayed in a way that emphasizes Jo Eun-ha’s zeal and loyalty. Through this, it can be confirmed that the intention to emphasize and highlight the zeal and loyalty of the female hero Jo Eun-ha is inherent in the images of male characters in Baekhaejeonjeon. Additionally, Choi Guk-yang is a male figure who was embodied for the purpose of reinforcing didacticism rather than popular interest. In this respect, Baekhaejeonjeon can be said to be a work that shows that personal desires should not go too far and disturb social order by presenting a wicked person like Choi Kuk-yang who aspires for the continuation of the family and showing the punishment.
