손자녀 양육자로의 전이가 조부모의 우울과 삶의 만족도에 미치는 영향 = Longitudinal Study of the Effect of the Transition to a Grandparenting Role on Depression and Life-satisfaction

Recently, the number of grandparents taking care of grandchildren for their working adult children has significantly increased. However, most of the prior research on this topic have been exploratory studies using cross-sectional data, and little has been discovered on how the grandparents' mental health changes upon assuming the grandparenting role.
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects that the transition to a grandparenting role has on grandparents' depression and life-satisfaction, and to examine sex and age differences of such effects. This study used 3 waves of national longitudinal survey data from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing. The sample included 4,321 grandparents. Multiple regression models were used to identify the effects of transition to a grandparenting role on depression and life-satisfaction. The findings are as follows: When tested on the entire sample, transition to a grandparenting role had a significant positive effect on life-satisfaction, but no evidence was found which suggested that assuming the grandparenting role has significant effects on grandparents’ depression. In addition,significant group differences were discovered, and positive effects on life-satisfaction were found only among grandmothers (and not grandfathers), and grandparents under 60 (and not grandparents 60and over) respectively. Evidence for sex and age differences in depression was not found. Lastly this paper discusses the practical implications of these findings.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구에서는 손자녀 양육자 전이가 조부모의 우울과 삶의 만족도에 미치는 영향을 알아보고, 나아가 조부모의 성별과 연령층에 따라 차이가 있는지를 살펴보았다. 본 연구는 고령화연구패널조사의 1~3차년도 자료를사용하여, 손자녀 양육 여부 문항에 응답한 자 중에서 2차년도에는 비양육자였으나, 3차년도에는 양육자라고 응답한 전이 경험자 55명과, 2차년도와 3차년도에 모두 비양육자라고 응답한 지속적 비양육자 4,266명, 도합 총4,321명을 대상으로 분석하였다. 분석 방법으로는 중다회귀분석을 실시하였는데, 독립변수인 손자녀 양육자로의전이여부만을 포함한 모델 1, 사회인구학적 변수(성별, 연령, 교육수준, 배우자 여부, 현재노동여부, 가족 총소득)를 추가한 모델 2, 종속변수의 사전점수를 추가한 시차내생변수를 포함하는 모델 3으로 확장하여 알아보았다.
본 연구의 주요 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 전체를 대상으로 한 분석에서 조부모가 손자녀 양육자로 전이한경우 삶의 만족도가 높아졌으며, 이는 사회인구학적 변수를 통제한 모델 2와 종속변수의 2차년도 점수까지 모두 통제한 모델 3에서도 여전히 유의하였다. 그러나 손자녀 양육자로의 전이가 우울에 영향을 미친다는 증거는 어떠한 모델에서도 나타나지 않았다. 둘째, 성별에 따른 차이를 살펴 본 결과, 손자녀 양육자로의 전이의긍정적 효과는 조모의 삶의 만족도에서만 발견되었다. 즉, 조부의 경우에는 어떤 모델에서도 삶의 만족도에 대한 긍정적 효과가 나타나지 않았으나, 조모의 경우 손자녀 양육자로의 전이는 모든 모델에서 삶의 만족도에유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 한편, 우울의 경우에는 조부와 조모 모두에서 손자녀 양육자로의 전이로 인한 유의한 결과가 어떤 모델에서도 나타나지 않았다. 셋째, 연령층에 따른 차이를 살펴 본 결과, 손자녀양육자로의 전이의 긍정적 효과는 중년기 조부모의 삶의 만족도에서만 나타났다. 즉, 중년기 조부모는 양육자로 전이한 경우 삶의 만족도가 높아졌으며 모든 모델에서 영향력이 유지된 반면, 노년기 조부모의 경우에는전이의 긍정적 효과가 나타나지 않았다. 한편 중·노년기 조부모 모두에서 양육자로의 전이가 우울에 영향을미친다는 증거는 발견되지 않았다. 논의에서는 연구 결과를 중심으로 조부모의 손자녀 양육에 대한 함의와 손자녀 양육자들을 지원하기 위한 정책적 방안들이 논의되었다.
