둔스 스코투스의 자기운동 이론 (I) = Duns Scotus's Theory on Self-motion (I)

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper aims at analysing the solution by Scotus to the so-called "act-potency
argument" in the 14th question of his commentary to 9th book of Metaphysics,
where he examines intensively the possibility of the self-motion. The argument consists
of two propositions, namely the proposition of act and potency and the proposition
of incompatibility. According to the proposition of act and potency the mover brings
about motion only as far as it is in act, and the movable is moved only as far
as in remains in potency. The proposition of incompatibility maintains that nothing
can stand at the same time and in the same respect both in potency and act. Scotus
checks the validity of both propositions under consideration for two principal meanings
of the notion of potency. According to his analysis the first proposition presents
itself no more valid when the notion of potency is taken as a mode. On the other
hand when the notion is taken as a principle, the second proposition is undermined.
In both case the criticism of Scotus is based on the assertion that there are the
agents which exercise an equivocal act through the virtuality.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 자기운동의 가능성을 묻고 있는 스코투스의 『형이상학주해』 9권 14문
에 제시된 소위 ‘현실성–잠재성 논증’에 대한 스코투스의 해결을 분석한다. 현실
성–잠재성 논증은 움직여지는 것은 잠재적이며 운동시키는 것은 현실적이라는
‘현실성-잠재성 명제’와 동일자가 동일한 관점에서 잠재성과 현실성의 상태에
동시에 처해 있을 수 없다는 ‘양립불가능성 명제’로 구성된다. 스코투스의 대응은
이 명제들의 타당성을 잠재성 개념의 두 가지 기초적 의미인 양태잠재성과 원리잠
재성의 관점에서 각각 비교 검토하는 방식으로 이루어진다. 현실성과 대립되는
양태로서의 잠재성 개념을 취할 때, 양립불가능성 명제는 필연적 타당성을 갖추지
만, 현실성-잠재성 명제는 그렇지 못하다는 것이 밝혀진다. 한편, 원리로서의 잠재
성 개념을 취할 때는 양립불가능성 명제 자체가 필연적 타당성을 인정받지 못한다.
두 경우 모두 스코투스의 비판은 잠세적 현실성에 의해 다의적 작용을 일으키는 능동자가 실재한다는 확신을 바탕으로 하고 있다.
