Activities of norfloxacin and ciprofloxacin against aerobic gram-negative bacilli and Staphylococcus aureus isolated in 1988 were tested by the agar dilution method. MICs of ciprofloxacin were much lower than those of norfloxacin. All of the isolates of Enterobacter iaceae with the exception of some Serratia marcescens were inhibited by very low concentrations of the quinolones. Some of the Pseudomonas aeruginosa and P. maltophilia isolates were inhibited by higher concentration. Some of the Acinetobacter anitratus isolates were inhibited by high concentration of norfloxacin, but MIC of ciprofloxacin was low. Norflorxacin-resitant P. aeruginosa isolates were also resistant to ciprofloxacin, but gentamicin-resistantnt gramnegative bacilli and methicillin-resitant S. aureus did not show cross resistance to the quinolones.
