ACCORDING to his Budget speech Mr. Winston Churchill is still hopeful of extracting a revenue of six millions from the Betting Tax in a full racing year. I do not think his estimate is likely to be realised in 1927. The volume of betting has declined appreciably since this time last year, and it is a matter of divided opinion as to whether this can be ascribed to the operations of the Tax or to the fact that the country is passing through a dull time just now.
