멘델스존의 숭고론 = Mendelssohn’s Theory of the Sublime

The theme of this article is Moses Mendelssohn’s theory of the sublime. In particular, it is the main task of this article to understand how Mendelssohn synthesizes the German tradition (of Wolff-Baumgarten) and the British perspective (of Burke) about the sublime. In 1758, Mendelssohn published a paper On the Sublime and Naive in the Fine Sciences, where he perceives the essential nature of the sublime as a pleasure based on the perfection of the object according to Wolff’s view. However, Mendelssohn later reads Burke’s A Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful (1757) and finds that Burke understands sublime as a mixture of displeasure and pleasure. And this view is absorbed into his theory. Such a change in Mendelssohn’s position is revealed in the Rhapsody (1761), and is ultimately reflected in the renewal version of On theSublime and Naive in the Fine Sciences(1771). In this article, we will to track the process in which Mendelssohn’s position undergoes change.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글의 과제는 18세기 독일 철학자 멘델스존의 숭고론을 고찰하는 것이다. 특히 멘델스존이 숭고론에 관한 (볼프-바움가르텐 식의) 독일적 전통과 (버크의) 영국적 관점을 어떻게 종합하고 있는지를 살펴보는 것이 이 글의 주된 내용이다. 멘델스존은 1758년에 『아름다운 학문에서 숭고와 소박함에 관한 고찰』을 발표하는데, 여기서 그는 볼프의 관점에 따라 숭고의 본질적 성격을 ‘대상의 완전성에 입각한 쾌’로서 파악한다. 그런데 그 이후 멘델스존은 버크의 『숭고와 아름다움의 이념의 기원에 대한 철학적 탐구』를 읽게 되고, 여기서 버크가 숭고를 ‘불쾌와 쾌의 혼합’으로 이해하고 있음을 알게 된다. 멘델스존은 버크의 관점을 자신의 이론 속으로 흡수하게 된다. 그러한 멘델스존의 입장 변화는 1761년에 발표한 『랩소디』에서 드러나며, 궁극적으로는 1771년에 발표된 『아름다운 학문에서 숭고와 소박함에 관한 고찰』의 수정본에 반영된다. 이 글에서 우리는 멘델스존의 입장이 변화를 겪는 과정을 추적하고자 한다.
