The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects that the orientation program have on the knowledge and attitude of new graduate nurses. Specifically, we compared the mean scores of two data sets that were collected from a set of new graduate nurses before and after the orientation program.
The subjects were composed of 29 nurses newly employed by the 'S' Hospital. All subjects received 4 weeks orientation program. The orientation program was implemented during the period from February 13, 2000 to March 13, 2000 and our data were collected just before and after this period. Each subjects was asked to answer to self report questionaires measuring nurses' knowledge and attitude.
Each reliabilities of instruments was assured(knowledge's Chronbach α were distributed from 0.74 to 0.95, and attitude's Chronbach α was 0.93).
The data revealed that nurses' and attitude were improved by the orientation program.
Some findings were as follows;
1. There was a significant increase in the mean scores of nurses' knowledge during the orientation program(Mean Score pre-orientation was 3.18 and M.S. of post-orientation was 3.53, t-value of the difference was 5.13, p=0.00).
2. There was also a significant increase in the mean scores of nurses' attitude(M.S. of pre-orientation was 3.91 and M.S. of post-orientation was 4.07, t-value of the difference was 1.89, p=0.00).
3. There were some possibilities that demographic characteristics of subjects could have influence on nurses' knowledge and attitude. Such characteristics include clinical departments where the subjects currently serve, size and location of the hospitals where the subjects had field experiences during school days, and the types of nursing that the subjects experienced. After controlling those variables the initial results was sustained.
These findings suggest that the orientation program for new graduate nurses could contribute to the improvement of nurses' the knowledge and attitude. In order to offer more effective orientation program, there should be need assesment process for individual nurse, selection process for core educational contents as well as more specialized contents.
