＂이봉상 사건＂의 전승과 의의 = The Transmission and Significance of a "Bong-sang Lee Case"

A case of Bong-sang Lee's escape was transmitted in many forms while it was stated by Bong-sang Lee himself and rumor spread and a witness told it and related materials were collected. It showed women's interests in Bong-sang Lee case, involved with a political event, in that it cared about a role of female narrator and Korean-reading readers during transmitting. And the records of the case were changed into different stories as it included characters around Bong-sang Lee more than it showed Bong-sang Lee's doings and developed information or cases relating with them. In case of the records of Bong-sang Lee case, it could be seen that using characters around Bong-sang Lee made the story be rich more effectively rather than it enlarged the scene or made it be more dramatic.
In case of recording the whole story of Bong-sang Lee case, it showed a positive view on his escape. This is because the records were written by people of a party called "Noron," including Bong-sang Lee. It could be written as an admirable story and read by people of Noron in the mood that after Iminoksa - Massacre of Scholars happened in the year of Imin, they looked back on the cases happening before and after the massacre and intended to strengthen the power of their party. The records of Bong-sang Lee case, which show Bong-sang Lee managed to survive, dramatically represent how people of Noron had kept alive. So the records could be regarded as an odd story that they could feel sympathy for in the same position. Therefore, they were transmitted as a form that emphasized care of Providence and loyalty from servants, reflecting critical minds of the party's keeping alive and protecting traditional values.

이봉상 도주 사건은 사건 당사자에 의해 진술되고, 소문이 퍼지며, 목격자가 전달하고, 관련 자료가 수집되면서 다양한 형태로 전승되었다. 전승 과정에서 여성 구술자의 역할과 한글 독자에 대한 고려가 있었다는 점에서 정치적 사건인 이봉상 도주 사건에 대한 여성들의 관심을 확인할 수 있다. 또한 이봉상 도주 사건에 관한 기록들은 역사적 인물인 이봉상의 행적보다는 그 주변 인물을 확대하고 주변 인물과 관련된 정보 및 사건들을 부연해 나가면서 각기 다른 이야기로 변이되었다. 주변 인물의 활용은 장면의 확대와 사건의 극적 구성을 원활하게 만들어주며 사건의 내용을 풍성하게 만들어 주었다.이봉상 사건의 전모를 기록한 경우는 대체로 이봉상의 도주에 대해 긍정적인 입장에서 서술하고 있는데, 이는 이 기록들이 당사자를 포함하여 노론계 인물들에 의해 이루어졌기 때문이다. 신임옥사 이후 노론계 인사들이 옥사 전후의 사건을 재조명하고 당세를 공고히 하고자 하는 분위기 속에서, 이봉상 사건은 하나의 美談으로 기록되어 읽혔다. 또한 死地에서 벗어난 이봉상에 대한 기록은 노론계 인물들이 명맥을 이어나가기까지의 과정을 극적으로 형상화하고 있기 때문에, 노론 집안 구성원들이 감정을 이입할 수 있는 奇談으로 평가받을 수 있었다. 따라서 이봉상 사건에 대한 기록은 당파의 명맥 유지와 전통적 가치의 수호라는 문제의식을 반영하여, 천명의 보살핌과 노비의 충성이 강조되는 형태로 변이되어 전승되었던 것이다.
