In order to investigate the wear behavior of the mating Al alloy according to the hardness of the mating tool steel, sliding wear tests have been conducted. As results, it was found that the wear characteristics curve pattern of Al alloy for sliding speeds was not varied with the hardness of the mating discs. However, the changes of wear behavior of Al alloy with the hardness of the mating disc exhibited only in low sliding speed ranges. At these ranges, Al alloy was abrasively worn away. When Al alloy rubbed on a mating disc with the hardness of HRC56, Al₂O₃ particles released from its worn surface were crushed and embedded on the surface of the mating disc and reduced the occurrence of wear. At the high sliding speed ranges, wear of Al alloy was hardly occurred by the formation of thick Al₂O₃ film on the surface of it, regardless of the hardness of the mating discs.
