This study is about the theology of the Eucharist in various churches recapitulated in the text of the "BEM" (Baptism, Eucharist and Ministry) or the "Lima Document" adopted in 1982 at the assembly of the "Faith and Order Commission."
After the introduction with the aim and method of the thesis in Chapter I, we deal with the understanding of the Lord's Supper in the Reformation era in Chapter II. Here we first investigate how the understanding of the Supper changed during the medieval church. We examine then how the reformers differed from Rome in their understanding of the Supper. While doing this, we also examine both the common features and the differences among them regarding the sacrament. By examining their respective views on the Supper, we are also in a position to properly understand the various views of the churches on the sacrament in our time.
In Chapter III, which is the main part of the thesis, we carefully investigate the text of the BEM document. We see that the purpose behind the BEM is to reach unity among the churches rather than to maintain existing divisions caused by theological disputes from the past. First, we investigate the formulations of the BEM in its whole structure. We also examine the churches' response to the BEM. In this way we can get a more accurate understanding of their theologies on the sacrament.
We conclude that the Eucharist of the BEM has secured a foothold for further efforts for unity. The churches need to fully appreciate the achievement and at the same time soberly realize the differences in the views on the Eucharist promulgated in the BEM, while they continue theological dialogue in humility and patiently pray for Christian unity in the doctrine of the sacrament.
