We examine indirect passives of some languages and give a critical review of two previous approaches to them. They are Huang"s (1999) complex predicate analysis and Pylkk?nen"s (2002) applicative analysis. The two approaches share an important insight that indirect passives involve passivization of some kind of additional indirect objects. Based on tests such as the control phenomenon in purpose clauses, the compatibility with depictive secondary predication, etc. in indirect passives, we show that indirect passives cannot easily be subsumed under the applicative analysis and that the complex predicate analysis is superior to the applicative analysis in capturing the properties of indirect passives discussed in the paper.
